| My Korean girlfriend hinted to me that I should get her something for Chuseok� Is it customary for a boyfriend to get their girl a gift on this holiday? |

Well I guess that you are the only person here who knows your girlfriend (let's hope) so only you can tell.
My girlfriend is Korean. No chance in hell she's getting anything from me on some random pointless day. Then again, she's smart and knows what a joke holidays are anyways, and she has no lust for spam or boxes of oranges. Your mileage may vary. |

Give her some rice cakes. It will not only let her know that you love her but it will demonstrate your cultural awareness of the event at hand.
This may win over her parents approval of you for a life time. |

JustinC,
1. See what others give to you then you can decide if you want it or not. If not, then just give it away to someone else.
2. Fruit basket
3. Nice wine
4. Gift certificates to someplace.
5. If it's a chick you like just give her flowers. If she takes it as a romantic gesture and is pleased you're all set. If she isn't throwing her arms around you but makes a grimace just say its a friendship gift for the holiday. This way if it works you win and if it doesn't you sort of win at least by knowing she wasn't interested and your being shot down wasn't too much of a crash and burn. |

Korea has a lot of "couple's" holidays and Chuseok is not one of them. Gifts of food or other nice consumables are the norm (what you see most in gift boxes and what I've received).
If you get your girlfriend a gift get her some chocolates or cosmetics. Better bet get her mom some expensive sesame oil or dried fish. Or if you're close with her family put some 10,000 won apples on the family alter at the Chae Sa. |

Chuseok is not a gf gift giving holiday anyway.
I would also assume you consider Thanksgiving to be a random pointless day as well.
Anyway I buy my wife a gift for our anniversary and for her birthday. We buy things for her parents on chuseok using Gmarket since we no longer live in Korea. We basically send over food and small gifts so they can enjoy it during Chuseok. We do the same thing for Lunar New Year. |

| I ran this by my Korean girlfriend and she said, "She is a wierd girl." It'd be normal to give a gift to her family, though, if you're invited to her house. |

I went to Seoul with my family and took my father in law to Costco. I handed over my credit card to him and said buy whatever you want. Oh he made out good on that one. 
The wife got my paycheck so I guess it's soju and rice cake for Stan this month.
Girlfriend? Good God I could never afford one even if I wanted to. |
