The foil to the bumbling Clouseau, but not quite a pure straight-man, since his character was goofy in his own right(sorta like Oliver Hardy to Stan Laurel). Odd how in one installment, he had his old police job waiting for him after returning from the lunatic asylum, where he'd been sent for trying to kill Clouseau in the last film.
Some pretty great moments as Dreyfus, but even he seemed to recoginze that the series was of uneven quality. Coincidentally, I just saw him in a totally non-comedic role a few weeks back, in Cronengerg's Dead Zone.
