It's just a novelty pop record (ala macarena etc)..with a chubby asian guy doing a funny horsey dance to a a catchy pop/dance song - that's what the world sees... and that's why Korea should be thoroughly depressed that Psy has become their number one cultural export.
and if this was supposedly an anti-consumerism record - anyone else finding it forehead bangingly ironic that Psy is now the new consumerism face plastered everywhere - advertising for anyone that will throw their Won at him?...
or maybe it was never about that in the first place?.... |

"Gangnam means, it's like Beverly Hills of Korea," said PSY, or Jae-Sang Park. "But the guy doesn't look like Beverly Hills. Dance doesn't look like Beverly Hills. ... And the situation in music video doesn't look like Beverly Hills. But he keeps saying I'm Beverly Hills style. So that's the point. It's sort of a twist."

There are subtle differences in the appeal for Korean and overseas viewers. At home, the focus is on the tweaking of Gangnam as a symbol of high-end culture.
You have this totally non-Gangnam PSY doing his ridiculous dance and chanting Your mans got Gangnam style, said music critic Choe Min-woo. So theres this aesthetic where hes skewering the Gangnam image.
For overseas audiences, experts said the comical qualities are what come across as fresh amid a wave of teen idol groups in the increasingly popular K-Pop genre...

I think Kim Jong Il is Korea's #1 cultural export. I say that in all seriousness.
Sorta like Ghadaffi or Pol Pot sometimes your country becomes identified with a single leader. Even the independent other half of your country.
I'm not sure MASH qualifies but it might be #2. |

MASH was only shown on AFKN. Most Koreans don't anything about it. |

But if we're talking about exports, what does it matter how much of the local market consumes it? |

Don't think MASH qualifies, unless anything produced by a US media network about Korea counts. |

He is the most popular k-pop singer due to his huge hit right now. He is not the countries no 1 cultural export. However, I fear there is no way you will understand that so let's forget it: PSY is the no 1 cultural export of the Republic of Korea.
Have a pleasant weekend. |

I mean in the sense of "What do you think of, when you think of Korea?"
Probably be KJI, MASH, and eating dog. |

When I first came here the only things British people associated with Korea were eating dog and the Moonies (there were a few high profile cases of people being brainwashed) Ask them today and it would be eating dog, the Moonies, Park Ji Sung and Psy. This is probably more a reflection on the dullness of your average Brit's intellect than a shortcoming in Korea's cultural outgoings. I'd love to know what PGHB with his rather pathetic 'you're not intelligent enough to understand, so I'm not going to tell you' act thinks Korea's biggest cultural export is. |

IMO, Korea is best known in the West for
The Korean War
North Korea and KJI
TaeKwonDo
And possibly technology firms such as Samsung or LG... but those aren't branded as KOREAN as much as some might think. |

Well, his song is number 1 in the UK charts right now. So, Korea might also become known for its sense of humor over there. |
