I was previously teaching in Korea at a High School, and I'm now looking to return to a Hagwon. I've just been offered a job at an Elementary/Middle School Hagwon in Daegu. I'm happy enough with most of the terms. However, holidays are a bit of a sticking point.

They are offering 10 days, but I can not take them in week long blocks in the summer and winter, just in various clusters. I was under the impression that this was the case at most hagwons, but I'm now unsure. The recruiter claims it is just the Kindergarten/Elementary Hagwons which have the two full weeks, but I'm not convinced.

Anyone have any thoughts? Going to try and negotiate, but don't want to negotiate too hard...

I have 2 simple questions for you.

In 1 or no more than 2 sentences, what are you asking for and what do you want?

Two points:

1. Most hagwons allow vacations in blocks. Ten days for example, 5 days in summer and 5 days in winter.

2. Your recruiter is BSing you. Recruiters aren't working for you, they're working for the interest of the hagwon.

If you don't like their offer of vacation, you can always negotiate the term or move on.

I have no issues with my current employer - my paid holidays are blocked, 2 1/2 months off in summer and 2 1/2 months off in winter.

Sorry had to rub it in but that seems a bit ridiculous not giving you blocked vacation. But it also depends on the contract that you sign and how it is worded regarding vacation period.

I know Koreans in the retail industry only get 10 vacations a year and they are forced to just take one day off a month as they usually work 7 days a week (not all but many are set up like this).

But you could probably say that you need time to visit your family and 5 days is needed. Like I said in a previous post tell them that in your culture family is important and spending time with them is vital, and I don't know about Korean culture but in my culture family is important.

Just make them feel shame and guilt - use sugar but not venom when doing this though.

Every school is going to be different. There is no set rule.

In some cases, you might be able to negotiate the days off. In most cases, you will have to take what the school offers.

Everyone has different priorities on what they want in a job. Some want the highest paying job, other want a better location or apartment, others want fewer hours.

Is this is the best offer you have? If so then take it. If not, then dump it.

I have 3 months off in the summer, 3 in the spring, 3 in the winter but only 12 weeks in autumn. They're blocked and I have a great relationship with my employer. As I have it so good and I only got here through luck and no talent I'm going to give out recommendations like I know what I'm talking about. Also I'll give a vacuous apology for bragging, therefor implicitly repeating how good I have it and further demonstrating how ignorance is not always a barrier to getting a good gig.

Thanks!

LOL Laughing

I asked for clarification, and then you asked for clarification claiming you "skipped" over it. Talk about insightful Laughing

I find it rather funny people are asking about contract details and the one thing they worry about is when they aren't working.

Perhaps, if you spent more time worrying about the job details itself, you might actually get a job you like and will not have to worry about getting a block of days off. It's just an idea. Right now it is Chinese holiday and Chuseok, but it is also very crowded. Even though you might get a week off, it's not that much fun.

I personally would be happy getting a Friday or Monday off (both when possible) at non-busy times of the year. This way I could actually enjoy myself.

Another little thing to think about is to schedule 4 work days that are busier. This way you automatically get 3 day weekends, and then when vacation days come your way, you will get a 4 day weekend at least, maybe 5. Then you could have theoretically 3 holiday sessions Cool

But, if you must, skip over these crazy notions. Apply to a hagwon and sign the contract. Work 5 days, get your 1 holiday on a Wednesday Laughing

Sorry for being logical, sensible, and annoying all at one go.

I assumed it was something called humour relating to one of the previous posts.

Agreed. Half the time I can't tell if he's trying to help in his own "special" away, or just a misguided troll who gets off on giving bad advice.

12 MONTHS of vacation a year? Yes that is a good gig indeed!
