I have lived in China; the food was amazing, cost of living was ridiculously low (you could eat well for about $5 a day), the people were very curious - *stare* - the level of English was non-existent. I was in a second-tier city so Shanggers will likely be a lot different. |
For sure on the food and cost of living (Shanghai housing is definitely not cheap, but in comparison to what you would get in Seoul for the same price it is). Being able to speak even basic Chinese really makes a difference when living here, as you most likely know. Which city did you live in? |

Wuhan. Yep, no one else has heard of it either, it only has 12 million population. Also only 2000 foreigners, 2 foreigner bars, one tourist attraction, 1 pizza place, a couple dozen factories, a massive river with 3 or 4 bridges although Mao would swim across and chill in his villa there |

I remember visiting his villa in Wuhan back in 2003 or so. The place was really run down and decrepit. I was impressed that visitors had turned his air raid shelter into a makeshift public toilet. Nothing screams respect for the Chairman like doing a sloppy orange diarrhea on the floor of his air raid shelter. |

Orange?? Yeowch!
It was probably still run down and decrepit when I was there but it wasn't open to the public. I've seen, online, Wuhan now only has one major train station, a new bridge, and you can get to Guangzhou in 3 1/2 hours! It used to be 12 hours to Shenzhen. I expect you still can't actually see across the river, though. |
