Update:

I decided to go to Dr Kim at the International Clinic in Itaewon. I was in full anxiety mode when I met with him, which just goes to show how the simplest of interactions affects me lately. I was a tad embarrassed, but on the plus side, I was able to show him exactly what the worst of my symptoms are: extremely shaky hands and watery eyes (an odd symptom, which I didn't mention before).

He was very kind and sympathetic and listened intently while I explained my problems. In the end, he prescribed Rivotril; 0.5mg in the morning and another 0.5 at night. I asked about other medications (like Buspar and Beta Blockers) that I'd read about online, but he said Rivotril is the standard medication he provides for cases like mine.

I've been on it for a few days now, and there's definitely been an improvement. I've been taking the first dose at approx. 9:00 a.m. and the next at 9:00 p.m. I have noticed that, in the afternoon - about halfway between doses - some symptoms (mainly my shakiness) reappear, but mildly, compared to before.

From what I've read online, the dosage I'm taking is small. If the slight mid-afternoon resurgence I've experienced continues, I'll bring it to his attention during my next visit and see about going up to a slightly higher dosage, since I'm not experiencing any side-effects so far, except for a little grogginess (but only in the evening, which I assume is based on the fact that it's close my usual bedtime).

The only thing I'm curious about is that I was given the medication in his office. I ended up having some bloodwork done, to check on my overall health and to rule out the possibility that something else is going on to cause my symptoms, other than just anxiety. While the nurse was taking my blood, I asked about pharmacies in the area where I could go to get my prescription filled. She said she'd point me in the right direction, but then, when it came time to pay, she gave me the bottle of pills then and there.

The visit itself was just under 35,000, but in total I paid just under 77,000. So, I'm looking at 42,000 for 2 weeks worth of medication. That's not terrible, but I'm wondering if, in the future, I should ask for a script that I can take to a pharmacy to get filled. Would it be cheaper to do that? Is there a higher markup when I get the pills in his office?

To be honest, after some time, once I'm on something with a dosage that is right for me, I'll most likely go to Ajou University Hospital instead, since it's closer to my home. But for the time being, I'll continue with Dr Kim. He also referred me to Adaptable Human Solutions, which Sultan also recommended, so I'll be looking into that sometime soon.

If you don't calm yourself down, you're going to die of a stroke (maybe several) before your time. If you're looking to overcome anxiety, start with this book> "The Anxiety Cure" by Robert L. Dupont.

A trip to India during Ghandi's birthday, paint your body in the spirit and tradition of the locals along the Ganges river and learn the story of Rama.

And above all, seek to attain Dharma (virtue) live your life by it, you shall never go wrong my darling.

Are you serious? Take a trip to India during Ghandi's birthday? Paint my body along the Ganges River? Learn the story of Rama? I feel like you're trolling, but I can't be sure.

As lovely and ethereal as that all sounds, this isn't 'Eat, Pray, Love'. I can't just up and leave on a whim.

I appreciate that you recommended a book, but I don't know what to make of your response in general. My gut reaction is that you are, in fact, a troll; I'm smart but a tad gullible and, therefore, easy bait.

If you're not trolling, please take into consideration that I wrote this post, and all but one reply, months ago. I'm doing much better now. Lots of people might not agree with my methods (e.g. taking medication, for the time being), but it's helping.

I knew I needed help, and I went looking for suggestions, but the last thing I need to hear from anybody is that I'm "going to die of a stroke" if I "don't calm down"; that, in itself, is not a calming thing to hear. Aneurysms have affected more than one woman in my family, so it's not something I take lightly.

If you're not a troll, you might want to try a different approach in the future. For instance, not telling somebody they're "going to die of a stroke" or quoting them on something they wrote four months ago, when there's plenty of positive stuff that came before and after. Also, please don't call me 'darling'. I consider it patronizing. I have anxiety issues, but I'm not a complete idiot. Rolling Eyes

Pretty much all of Died By Bear's posts are like that. Then he wonders why nobody gives him a serious response when he tries to start a serious thread.

Yep, what's with that dude and his umbrella shtick? We get it that you are infatuated with umbrellas, ffs. Give it a rest, already; $hit is old and not the least bit funny.

For the record, it's not an 'umbrella schtick', it's a piss shot at mr.-someone-stole-my-umbrella-OP thread. Don't worry about me, I don't really care if anyone takes me seriously or not because posting here is not a serious part of my life. Maybe yours, but not mine.

We are allowed to have fun once in awhile.

To the OP,

Someone very close to me died of a stroke. She had a lot of anxiety. She also had a PhD, was a prof and worked very hard through her life to educate herself. She just could never beat the anxiety problem. That's why I said what I did about the stroke. She's not the first to die from strokes, a woman in her early 40's down the street had two TIA strokes in a space of a year and now can't even lift herself off the chair. Why? Because she was constantly stressed out and had all kinds of anxiety. I'm glad you're doing better.

Trolling is an art form. I have no time to learn that art. I leave that to the gentlemen from expats site.

If you were really trying to be constructive and helpful with your reply, then I apologize for calling you a troll. And I appreciate that you're glad I'm doing better.

I don't know anything about this umbrella business, but still... When you suggested the following...

... and then ended it all with a big ole Very Happy I assumed you were trying to be funny, and I was offended. Surely, you can understand why, especially since you've just admitted to taking 'a piss shot' in other posts. Perhaps you were doing the same in mine.

That said, I have to ask about your suggestions... Are these things you've actually done? Are they even things people you know have done? Did you just pull them out of thin air, or were you being genuine?

If not, then it does feel like you were trying to being comical about my situation. Like I said, women in my family have died from or at least been severely altered by aneuryms, so if you weren't being serious, then I still take offense, and I imagine these women you know of, who've either died from strokes or been crippled by them, might feel the same way.

FQ, instead of going into details on this very public thread, feel free to pm me if you want details on what people I know have done, or what I've done in India.

If you have the extra money and want to have a preview of what I was talking about, do a search on Amazon for a fantastic dvd titled "PBS HOME VIDEO - The Story of India" with Michael Wood. Michael has done many other works, is one of the most enlightened & educated British people I've ever met, and speaks several languages. He walks you through the entire history of the country, and on disc 2 chapt. 1 - the story and video of Ghandi's birthday celebration.

It's a wonderful introduction. Maybe you will get the disc, maybe you won't - maybe you'll visit India and take some advice, maybe you won't. The choice is yours. The problem with websites like this, is that you have a number of malicious alcoholics that post here and don't really give a damn about your problems. In fact, they love posts like your OP just for their sick entertainment, then spend hours discussing how stupid they think you are while pissing away their afternoons.

Have a good weekend

Sincerely & Best Regards,

DBB

Wrong. Never go to a doctor for anything "closest to where you are living." Your principle and entire staff will know about it before the end of the week. Go to a clinic well away from where you work. This is Korea. Medical confidentiality is not a high priority here. Make sure you put some distance between where you live and where you opt to get medical treatment. It should go without saying that this applies doubly to anything concerning mental health.

Thanks for the advice. I did exactly what you suggested. I live in Suwon and have only seen doctors in Seoul. Even the thought of going to Ajou worried me a little, although it's far enough away that I'm sure it would be fine.

SAM-e can be helpful in calming anxiety. Also magnesium malate. Avoiding stimulants as well. A bit of yoga, reflective prayer and meditation go a long way as well.
