Just finished watching REC and thought I'd share a few of my favourite non American films of late. I like American films, but it seems that recently almost every American film is a sequel, a remake, a re-imaging or a rip-off. Not too much originality these days and it seems that some of the most interesting and most likely to surprise films are non American. Would love to hear what others like. I've been a bit too busy to see all that many films and would love to know what others think is good.

REC - Spain - 2007
Let the Right One In - Sweden - 2008
Pan's Labyrinth - Mexico - 2006
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - Sweden - 2009

I just watched Tokyo Story (1953) this evening. Slow, simple, subtle, honest, true, & moving. A number of lists rank it among the top greatest movies ever made.
Not sure about that, but I was definitely struck by it & its gonna stick with me.

You can watch the whole thing right off youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_gUIxeEIFw

Aside from the obvious ones, here's a few that you might not have heard of (some are still pretty famous)

M - Considered one of the first "modern" serial killer/police procedural films. Great concept- The criminal underworld races against the police to hunt down a child killer

Tampopo - One of the great foodie films out there. Also a shout out to Babette's Feast in the foreign foodie category.

Tokyo Sonata

This Charming Girl, My Dear Enemy - Korean movies would be a whole separate thread, but the work of Lee Yoon-Ki really stands out.

and of course

Run Lola Run ...showed it to my students, my coteacher loved the movie to and thought it would be okay, unfortunately everyone learned how to swear in German by the end...

I like M, Tampopo, and Run Lola Run

A Prophet, France
Gozu, Japan
Ichi the Killer, Japan
Amacord, Italian
Incendies, French (Canadian?)
Aimless Bullet, Korean
Layer Cake, UK (some trek alum there)
Also (may sound cheesy) 'Banlieue 13', France. Loving the action.
If they didn't play that movie 360 times a year in Korea I probably would have got the DVD.

That movie is the best. Also one of my favorites is Immanuelle Laughing

I'll second 'Run Lola Run' , 'A Prophet' , 'Layer Cake' & 'Pan's Labyrinth'.

Also,

'Burnt by the Sun' - Russian
'Red' , 'White', 'Blue' (the Three Colors Trilogy by Kieslowski) - French & Polish
'Amelie'- French
'Les Miserables' - French

Finally , 'The Red Violin' ,
(which MAY be American, but it's follows the ownership of this violin, from Renaissance Italy to Victorian England to Maoist China to modern America)

Lotta people with good taste on this thread.

Many of my favorites have been mentioned. For horror fans, a few you might not have seen yet -

Eden Lake (Britain)
The Descent (Britain)
Pontypool (Canada)
