I don't at all have the mentality of a runner, and there's a lot I'll put up with in terms of cultural differences and small business demands, but there are some very bad directors out there, who give half-pay, verbally abuse, and make people shower on the balcony (to cite just a few posters at Dave's).

You go on doing as momma says.

It's what may be shoved down my throat that bothers me. I'll keep my bib on, thanks, in case things get too messy.

I definantly keep my own ticket just as security.

I know peole say it is the hagwons ticket so you should really give it to them but I do believe it has been entrusted in your name, hence it is your ticket.

If your mom bought you a return ticket would you give it to her for safe-keeping just because she bought the ticket???? I highly doubt it.

Anyways...if the hagwon treats you well (and you in return give respect) there should be no problem with who holds the ticket.

I don't think that hakwon owners should be expected to trust brand new teachers who have just arrived at their school at the same level as they would be trusted by their mothers.

If it's in the contract that the teacher is not entitled to round-trip airfare unless they finish the contract, then there is no reason why the school should let you keep the return ticket. I'm sure there are a lot of teachers who were allowed to hang on to their tickets who ended up using them to pull runners, which isn't fair to the school since the school shouldn't have to pay for the ticket if the teacher doesn't finish the contract.

All I can say is that if I ran a school, and I paid for tickets that teachers weren't entitled to until they completed their contracts, there's no way I'd let them keep them. I don't see it as a respect issue at all. What would your boss say if you asked to be paid in advance from now on? Why should your boss pay you for work you haven't done yet? Giving you a plane ticket you haven't yet earned amounts to the same thing.

If they want to save some cash, they can take a "risk"

Please don't forget that the school is assuming far more risk and investment in us, than we are with them.

Letting the director hold the ticket until the end of the contract isn't even close to meeting them halfway on sharing the risk of the working relationship between us and them.

If we had to pay fully for our airfare, and fully for our accommodation, as many schools in other ESL countries do, then the risk would be more evenly shared.

Gripes about allowing the school hold your return ticket is on the same level as being spoon fed, but complaining about how many fingers the spoon-holder is using to support that spoon.

Yes, hauling up your life and travelling around the world for work is no sort of risk at all. How dare we not meet directors halfway on an issue because they are afraid they might hit a bump. Foreign teachers should be happy with anything they get, eh? Wink
