In Korea I would go with a local brand as you can get a far better price. Maintenance will also be pretty affordable and reliability is pretty good.
We had 2 cars in Korea, Hyundai each time and we had very few problems. Gas prices being what they are in Korea, I would go for a car that has the best gas mileage.
If you guys are in Canada or the US you can check out Toyota or Honda before Mazda as the latter brand tends to cost more in maintenance (my personal experience).
Subaru is good for reliability but parts cost a lot.
Mitsubishi is great (we have one) and their warranty program is excellent.
Kia is better than it was and prices are lower than others but reliability is still an issue.
Hyundai is pretty darn good these days and their prices remain competitive. Before we bought our Mitsubishi, we looked into a Hyundai and we liked what we saw.
Unfortunately we could not go with the compact as we have 2 kids! |

Short answer: I cheated. 
Long answer: The GT-R has several different screens worth of car gauges created by Polyphony Digital (the makers of Grand Turismo). So I set it to show fuel economy data and watched how my driving style impacted the mileage. From there I learned how to modify my behavior to elicit the best mileage. During this process I learned how to manipulate the readings. In reality I can increase the mileage by double my norm, but that does involve a great deal of patience and actively monitoring driving habits and conditions, so that you reduce needless acceleration and unnecessary braking, and maximize coasting. |
