OP, I don't think anybody can give you a perfect answer. Officially, tutoring/volunteering is illegal without your employer's express permission, but hundreds if not thousands of people do it anyway and get away with it. That said, I don't know if what you're planning to do could really be described as work or volunteering - it's not much different from the casual "teaching" that happens at language exchange events. So long as you're not being paid, you're basically just helping your girlfriend's brother with his English homework, right?

I'd be more worried if things go south with the girl, never mind the father (prob too busy to be bothered about a foreigner at this stage)

Technically, volunteering is illegal on an E-2 visa as well.

I've personally known two people who were deported for volunteering. They were volunteering at an orphanage.

But in the instance the OP is talking about, they'd have a better chance of winning lotto, than they would busting you for it.

Are you serious? They weren't making money and were being kind by helping out little children and they got deported? KOREA SPARKLING!!!

This is about Korea sparkling. It is about visa restrictions on activities that fall outside of your sponsored employment.

Volunteering can be a non-issue if you clear it with kimmi and your employer. However, it is likely you could not volunteer for any sort of politically related activity.

Volunteering to help kids learn can be done if you clear it with kimmi and your employer.

So by all means, volunteer, but just make sure you clear it first.

LOL! Why is it that everyone who says they "love Korea" has been here about two months? Very Happy

Enjoy the honeymoon period my friend. It has about eight weeks left. (But sure to get back to us.)

For all thier good qualities, Koreans and the Korean system can be very capricious. You have to be careful and do things the way you are supposed to.
