Hey, let me know what you think. I am 7 months into my contract, and eagerly looking forward to completing my time here and getting back home. When my boss gave me my immigration paperwork, I noticed that he had written the length of my stay was 11 months. Being an ignorant newbie I didn't think too much about it at the time. I looked at my visa recently, and it as well has me departing after 11 months instead of 12. I have a pretty good relationship with the director and he's thrown around comments about me renewing (sorry, not gonna happen), but I'm still pretty sure this may be an attempt to screw me out of my severence. I have no intention of letting him do that. But as well, I have no problem getting out a month early.

Has anyone else experienced something like this- an 11 month visa?

If you don't have the return portion of your airline ticket, and you don't trust the guy, then talk about the possibility of returning until you have the ticket in your hand, prior to signing a new contract.

If you do have the plane ticket, then I say what do you expect? To get a bonus after only 11 months? You should have read the financial terms of your contract.

If the law requires a minimum 12-month contract then you may have some recourse there. I would suggest you negotiate to work another six months providing you get a bonus after working 12 months, but since you want to high-tail it back home I suggest you just do so.

But please don't up and run early. It makes life harder for those of us who are here and have to live with the reputation forged by past teachers.

Make the best of the situation. Sometimes you don't get everything you want. And it's not as if he's breaking the contract. Consider it a lesson learned.

Take care.

Maybe I wasn't clear. The contract I signed says 12 months, but then when he sent all the visa paperwork and had it filed with the govt, it was only for 11 months. This is where the quandary comes in.

I have no intention of running. I will complete my committment here. All i wanted to know was if anyone had ever signed a 12 month contract and received an 11 month visa?

Did you ask your boss about this?

You should bring it up with him, and ask him to take you to immigration to have your ARC extended until your contract is finished. If he says no, then he is screwing you.

Now is the right time to clarify everything. Don't leave it too the last minute. Smile

Contact efl-law about this. Not sure he can help you, but he is keeping track of this recent 11-month trend crap that hagwon owners are pulling.

This could be some ammo he or other lawyers might need to put an end to this kind of crap.

My husband noticed the same thing about his visa. Where did you get yours processed? He went to Manila. I don't know why his is only 11 months, either, but I don't think our director knows about it yet.

I don't think it's that big of a deal, as visas can be extended by going to immigration. Like someone else said, your contract is for 12 months, so I think you're pretty safe. If your boss started refusing to renew your visa, you could go against him legally and win easily, since immigration has really started cracking down on the 11th month firing stuff.
