Okay is there some reason why anytime you go into a Western bar there are Americans/Australians bragging about being in prison?

Here in Korea I've never heard a Korean brag about being in prison. Why the heck would you be in prison?!? They would never be there in the first place, or at least move to a different city afterwards and never mention it again to anyone.

But it seems like almost everyone in the US has been to prison, and like to pick up chicks with it, it's a very common thing I guess and thought attractive by American women.

What's the deal?

How strange. I've never ever heard anyone brag about being in prison over here.

Perhaps you're just hanging out with the wrong people in the wrong places?

Nor have I heard anyone bragging about being in prison.
Nor do I know any American women who would find it an attractive trait. You do realise most people here have degrees (sometimes advanced).

For the record, I have never been in prison - I am a believer in only the pettiest of crimes.

troll.. I know guys who have been in Prison, are in Prison and the last thing they would ever do is let anyone know they were in prison..
it's not hard. it's embarrassing.
remember.. you got caught! HELLO. the cool guy is the guy who didn't get caught.. so why brag like you are hard and tough because you did time?
I think the guys you heard bragging where probably locked up for DUI or fighting and just turned a 10 hour in the drink tank to a 2 year behind bars story and you bought it!

Then they are either tourists, lying or not in Korea.

If they have an E2 they have a clean FBI check and even an arrest with NO conviction would result in probably not getting a visa.

I agree in part and disagree in part.

For the most part, this is spot on. Most of the people who talk about "doing time", especially in Korea, are full of it. It's one thing to share a fun drunk tank story, it's another to claim that you were in actual prison.

I just don't see anyone in Korea bragging about being in prison. I don't see how they could get in outside of a few extreme examples. What's next? They also managed to be special forces in Iraq?

But back home (America) its a different story. Now most people won't go out and brag about it, but there is a certain "respect" given to people who've been in prison. And I mean prison.

Dude...prison? American prison? Prison, not jail. Saying "it's not hard", especially to someone who actually did hard time, is just asking for trouble. Sure, chuckle at someone who did 14 days picking up trash and attending classes. But someone who did 5 years?

People that have been to prison are so popular.................try even getting any decent job with just a misdemeanor on your background check.

Well, in the undercurrent that is the non-college degree segment of the population (the majority) or even non HS graduate population, (a significant minority), groups that already have trouble getting 'decent jobs', things like prison do carry a bit of 'cred'. You're talking about people who already know they aren't going to amount to much outside of getting some artwork or the lottery or maybe, maybe rising up at their blue collar job to something halfway decent. There's A LOT of people out there like that. Just because some of us didn't run into them during our idyllic rural/suburban existence, doesn't mean it isn't out there.

Saying you've been to prison doesn't make you popular or make people want to be you friend, but it does carry a certain respect. And respect can cause people to latch on to someone. Especially in the circles that such people would run in where violence and being 'hard' carries much more weight.

I know a guy here who was in prison in England for a few years, but I don't think he's very proud of it. Barely got that F5 in time.

Excuse me, not sure what you're getting at...

Nah... It was always a winner making dinner reservations under that name on dates. "The chef would like to offer you two free dessert, Mr. Stamos Jr..." In like Flynn.
