Ok, I know someone who recently found a large quantity of money in their bag. How it got there is a mystery and they can't fathom how it ended up in their bag nor when it could have been put (dropped) there.

It's in one of those bank envelopes (Bank's name is given) but there is no other way to track the owner.

So, what advice would you give?

Keep the money or hand it into the police?

hand it in to the police. If Korea has a system where after 90 days or so no one claims it then it's yours, do the right thing and hand it in. BUT I don't know if you can trust the police here. OTOH, if the police don't have that policy, then just keep it--better in your pocket then spread amongst the policemen the second you turn your back and walk out the door.
How much was it by the way? Over 500,000k?

I doubt if the police will rip the money off. Go in with a friend therefore there is witnesses. But do turn the money in, it's not your money and somebody is grieving over losing it.

are you guys serious? Hand it into the police? How are they going to find the owner? "Oh hey anyone lose a big sum of money? Ok here you go". I would just keep it if theres no way to track the owner. What's to stop the police from keeping the money and saying someone claimed it? I would just keep it and count yourself lucky. Or if your going to turn it into the police, please let me know which police station. Wink

Yes, sort of my thoughts, too. If I was back home, I would hand in the money as I would get some sort of receipt back for handing in the money plus having more confidence in the professionalism of my own country's police force.

Also, this person who now has the money does not know which police station to hand the money into as they don't know where they were when they first came into possession of the money. They are trying to retrace their steps and contacting places where someone might have accidentally dropped the envelope into their bag i.e. restaurants, cafes etc.

And, I highly doubt that every Korean police station shares information like this between themselves.

Sit on it. If no one (sketchy) comes looking for it after a month or two, pocket it.

A bank envelope isn't that big. So, it isn't a sizable sum like 500,000k i.e. a half a milllion dollars. At most it is about 10,000k. Hand it in to the police. Every fortune is a cause of mis-fortune (Buddha).

If it's over 10,000,000 won, keep it. It's probably for some dirty politician or rich arsehole. Make 50% donation to an orphanage.

If it's less than that, report it to the police. It probably belongs to some poor ole' lady.

Being foreign, they'll probably think you stole it. Give it to me. I'll turn it in for you.

Where exactly did this happen?

It could be anything from someone putting the money in the wrong bag to a set-up where a school owner is trying to say it was stolen so the teacher can be fired without severance.

Well, you should first come to a place like here and ask total strangers on advice what to do. Which you did, so good job!

Then, you should sit on it, like someone else said and see what happens. After some time, you should donate some to a charity and then keep the rest.

That's what I would do.

I was hoping to learn if anyone here had experience in handing found money into the police. What the procedures are and if unclaimed money is returned to the finder? I wouldn't want it going into the cops' soju fund.

Have no idea. They have other envelopes and papers in their bag and did not notice the money envelope until they were at home a few days ago. Hence, the trying to retrace their steps from last week.

Looks to me it the amount of money is someone's salary. I'd say report it to the police. Be a good samaritan.

It's what I've advised. Better to have a clear conscience in case someone is looking for the money.
