It seems these unlicensed Korean English and PE teachers have created union of their own and moving toward seeking better pay and benefits already. And seems Koreans are against this new policy. I love it when there's infighting among Korean teachers and unlicensed teachers. I assume we will ultimately benefit from their infighting. |

I don't agree that you have to think like a Korean,
but you would do well to understand how Koreans think. |
Ok, but the result is still the same. |
Actually no it is not the same result at all.
Understanding how Koreans think in a workplace setting will help you deal with issues better, adapt in some cases, make your points more effectively in other cases. |

No, as Patrick wrote the results are not necessarily the same.
What I am trying to get across is that often we foreign teachers get into
seemingly illogical situations with the Korean staff and 99 times out of 100
we get angry, blame them, blame the system call them all kinds of names
etc.
If we could understand the reasons behind what they are doing,
it might save us a lot of grief.
I'm not saying we would always agree with
what they do, but at least we could understand why they are doing what
they do. |

Yes, and in the meantime, while we are caught up in office politics with our co-teachers, the students aren't learning English.
As I write this, my KET is studying how to work with NETs. Studying like it's some arduous task. Just like the students study English in the same way. At no point do they see the interpersonal connection between language and people. It's just a subject that is formally studied.
Japan was much the same way. I never had to deal with any of this nonsense when I taught in Taiwan. They got it.
Korea wants to use English for entrance exams. My KET said as much. And, as the topic of this thread suggests, that seems to be popular opinion and NETs are no longer needed to teach English.
What difference does it make if I understand that or not? As I said, the result is the same. |

You can't change it. You can try to encourage them to think differently,
but that's about as far as it will go.
Weiguk-ins were never wanted in the PS system and they never will be.
You have to get brutally honest with yourself and decide whether or not you can contribute anything positive while working in the system as it stands, because they are not going to change for you, me or anyone else.
You can give up like many do and take solice in alcohol or some other vice, or you can return to your home country and start again.
As for myself, I reached the point where I could see nothing good in the future and felt that Korea and Korean students would be better off if I
weren't there.
Just remember if you do leave, you may end up like me, poking about
Dave's, wishing I had spent more time finding solutions than complaining
about the problems.
I hope you are a better teacher than I was. |

| Could someone help me? I am applying through a recruiter for Fall 2013 and I noticed that EPIK has started to accept applications according to their Facebook page. However, going through my recruiter they said the application date was April 1 for EPIK. Is that when they accept applications through recruiters or what? I am confused. I don't really want to wait until April. I probably should have applied direct. Sorry if this is in the wrong place. |

Not unless you bring the office politics into the classroom. The two aren't mutually inclusive.
And as a side note learning to understand how Koreans or your co-teachers think generally doesn't involve politics at all...just a open mind. |
