What has this question got to do with teaching in Korea...?
After watching AFKN tv for many years now (in Korea) I am quite sure that the movies and programs on AF..N in Japan and Europe are much better than the movies and programs shown on AFKN (Korea).
Why is this so? I would have presumed USA soldiers based in korea would be under much more stress and danger - than their Japan/European based comrades - therefore shouldn't they get better movies and programs - or is it just because of the number of soldiers are greater in Japan/Europe (35,000 based in Korea, 45,000 based in Japan ((not counting Europe))).
And why are there more soldiers in Japan than in Korea? I thought the DMZ was in Korea?
Nothing much behind these questions - (so i don't need any smart-as.s replies) just bored with pondering them by myself).....

So today I was on a run and the South korean Army base inthe hills were playing the tune to the dirty dozen.
Weird or what. Also heard the Seoul subway bird in the woods. |

here is the explanation I got from AFN a few years ago and it still holds. AFN here is available over the air which means shows that Korean broadcasters have gotten rights to by and large can't be shown here. Thats why the Academy Awards weren't shown here.
It holds true most of the time, except Dong-Ah TV has been showing the current season of "Friends" while AFN is also showing the current season and supposedly will show the finale Fri. I don't get that one. Shows like "24" that AFN shows are a couple of seasons old (AFN just showed season 1) somebody here has seasons 2 and 3 and is showing them.
Also AFN in Japan is only available on cable or mini-dish and not over the air so they don't compete with Japanese broadcasters
Given the availability of the mini-dishes I won't be suprised if AFN becomes unavailable to us non-USFK types, though I got a feeling the SOFA here has something to do with it still being available in the future |

Yeah, I know what you mean. It seems that AFN Europe and Japan get the better tv shows and movies(although AFN Korea does get "Fear Factor). I'm glad that someone else notices this as well. I think Rudyflyer's explanation probably holds a great deal of merit. |

Why do you assume it's better elsewhere? It's network TV. It sucks by definition. Basically it's a channel that has to cater to a wide array of people and abide by certain decency standards. I'd put it on par with a network at home. |

I have cable Tv - 74 channels - and all the other channels seem to suck also....
I just wanted to know why AFKN sucks more than AF(Janpan/Europe)N TV.... |

I tried to give you the explanation I got from AFN a few years ago. You can email them and see if you get something different. They seemed to be quite friendly to non-DOD people when asking about programming.
While you are at it, ask them why they are running :"The Apprentice" after everybody knows what happened?
To me AFN is OK, not great but better than Star World which is what I had in Gwangju. I get upset at some of their sports selections but with bit torrent and internet radio, I do have ways of seeing 99% of the stuff I want. The rest, I just have my father tape it and send it over |

They show Survivor and a decent mix of sports. That's all the TV I care about. |
