So I have read about roaches, intestinal worms and the occasional rude school owner but never about rats. Can I assume they aren't an issue? In Kuwait sand and cats were an issue. Ever garbage can had its own family of cats. Confused

Yes, all that and ninja mosquitoes, screaming monks, drafty windows, sadistic adjumas and and barking spiders on the subways. Save yourself and don't come here!

It's funny, I'm surpised that rats are not a problem here (or something like bedbugs either). In five years, I've only seen one rat and that was on the train tracks.

Try Thailand for rats. It's overun with rats and when they try to eradicate them they poison a few tourists here and there at the same time.

I've got a phobia of them and I'm surprised they aren't more of an issue, what with garbage being heaped by the side of the road rather than neatly stored in bins. I suppose one positive is there are plenty of feral cats hanging around. They probably aren't keen on the local food too

Cats won't attack rats, they're too big. On farms, dogs are used as a tool to deal with rats; cats are used for mice. The feral cats in Korea feed off of garbage on the side of the road.

Plenty of rats on the waterfront, but the mice have a hard time hiding inside concrete walls in the apartment buildings.

I remember going into a few restaurants and bars in Busan and finding a rat or two running across the floor. It was in winter and a pretty chilling discovery. However, never found any rats anywhere in Seoul except along the river.
