I just got back from Dr. Choi in Hannam-dong. I apparently need a root canal on 1-2 teeth, he's not sure yet.

He quoted me 900,000 per tooth with crown included. He informed me that I could get cheaper elsewhere (400-500k a tooth) but that it would not be as good of a job as he would do.

Does this pricing seem reasonable? Anyone been to this guy before? How soon do I need to decide on getting this done?

This person is ripping you off. I paid 450,000 won for a gold crown (gold is cheaper, or at least partial gold) by a very good dentist that worked on a difficult tooth.

I wonder if small city clinics do crowns and tooth implants? I got a tooth pulled there for 7000 won, which seems pretty cheap to me. I need to have a crown put in and I need a tooth implant.

i'd probably go somewhere else as well, partly because other dentists will likely be able to do an adequate job for cheaper and partly because, if i was going to pay that much to ensure top-quality work was done, i would go to a dentist who i knew had a reputation for being excellent. perhaps your dentist has this sort of reputation, but i would not give him 1,800,000 before being absolutely sure that that's the case.

I got one done at KyungHee dental teaching hospital back in October. It cost me 2 mil, but that included a bridge and a crown. The dentist that does the work is the head of the department, speaks good English, etc.

No, not reasonable. Unless you think twice as much or more is reasonable for a root canal? However, I've heard implants can range from 1 to 3 million Won.

Why a bridge, don't they push implants these days?

Not good dentists that don't believe you need them yet.

I need a root canal. I don't have insurance. I live in a small town near Jinju. I don't know if I want the dentist here to work on my teeth (he works at the hospital)? I went to a dentist in Jinju and they quoted me 1 million won for a root canal + a gold crown. I think this is pretty expensive. Would it be worth it to go to Seoul or Busan to get the work done? If I had to do more than 2 or 3 trips it would be quite a pain but if I could save at least 200,000 won I would do it.

Does anyone have recommendations for English speaking dentists in Seoul or Busan? I was looking at Tufts. Seems like a good place but I haven't talked to them yet.

Edit: The dentist in Jinju did X rays already, and I have known that I've needed a root canal for a month or two, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I hope you like pain. Ill never get another root canal in Korea. You have to come back 3-4 times to complete the procedure and they only numb you up on the initial visit. The subsequent visits you get no anesthetics and the dentist I had kept hitting the nerve that sent shock waves of pain down my body, I thought I would cry. Good luck.

I'd avoid that dentist near Jinju--sounds like he's trying to take you for a ride. You'd probably be looking at 5-600,000 won in Seoul--and would get a better looking crown for it. I've had better experiences with Korean dentists than Dodge has (minus one dentist)--let me know if you'd like me to recommend a couple.

There are two types. Someone who works solo, taking care of the locals. They do the cheap and nasty, because the clientels don't know any better. Looks like you went to one of those. If you go to a big chain dentist, they'll do much nicer. Jinju should be big enough to have a big chain set up.

1 mil for one root-canal sounds too much. I am going through a major re-construction at the moment and they are doing 5 of my teeth for 2 mil. (There are unspoken services and discounts for big jobs, for being a public school teacher, foreigner who speaks Korean, etc.)

I had a root canal + porcelain crown done for IIRC 600,000. It hurt a bit, but I've never had a root canal in the States or Korea that didn't hurt a little.
