Taxi operators from across the nation plan to hold a massive rally in Seoul in early December calling for the immediate passage of a proposed parliamentary bill that defines taxis as a form of public transportation. The bill has met with opposition from bus operators and members of the National Assembly.
Four groups representing drivers and taxi companies said Friday that around 300,000 of their members will gather in Yeouido Park, taking 250,000 taxis to the demonstration site, on Dec. 7.
The plan came a day after the ruling and opposition parties agreed on delaying presenting the bill to a plenary session for final approval until next month. The decision was made after bus operators vehemently opposed the move and staged a brief walkout Thursday morning.
We denounce the government for moving to ruin the taxi industry and the National Assembly for overturning promises to us, said a member of the Federation of Korean Taxi Workers Unions.
Unless the Assembly passes the bill at the plenary session next month as they said on Thursday, well hold a series of rallies across the country, starting with the one in Seoul.
The groups originally planned a rally on Nov. 20 but scrapped it as the bill was passed at the parliamentary Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs Committee on Nov. 15 and the Legislation and Judiciary Committee on Nov. 22.
But with final approval being postponed, they say the rally is inevitable. They held a massive demonstration in June in Seoul with taxis not operating for one day |
It looks like it will be an ongoing battle? |

250,000 taxis around Yeouido Park?
I don't think they'll even fit in Yeouido. |
