I don't live there myself but mokdong is a pretty good spot. There's a costco, big department stores etc. Not to far from the night life spots and pretty central. |

Must be a lot of teachers there... heard of so many getting screwed in that area. Of course, we rarely hear glowing reports from anyplace.
Just be sure to check with other teachers -- past and present. |

I'd like to give this thread a *bump* since I'll be moving there in a few weeks. Any opinions? I asked a Korean friend in New York, and all she said was "very clean, very big apartment buildings." But compared to New York City "very clean" is a relative term. |

Yeah it's good.
Lots of wealthy people, so there are nice shopping areas and some big plaza type areas.
You will probably live in a villa ("beelah") though.
The other problem with wealthy areas is that there are lots of people who want English lessons, therefore lots of hagwons, therefore a saturated market, therefore lots of shop around ability for parents.
This equates to your worklife being bad because you are always answering to the demands of rich fussy people. |

"Clean" is a pretty relative term in Korea. The pollution anywhere in Seoul is probably as bad or worse than NYC.
Mokdong seems nice. There is an ice-rink there as well as a large sports stadium. There are open skates on the weekends if you are interested in that sort of thing. We have an ice-hockey club that operates out of the Mokdong rink as well if you're interested in playing or learning hockey. |

Why is it funny? It means small area, or east. |

Mokdong is OK, but actually a little boring and although it is a more affluent area, not a lot of private teaching potential. The thing about Mokdong is it is far from Itaewom, Kangnam, Co-ex, anthing (except Immigration). Also late at night a lot of taxis in these areas will not want to go there. But that happens a lot anyway because you are a foreigner. |

it's pretty close to HongDae, and not really that far from Itaewon. On the taxi front I always find that walking 50 metres down the road away from any nightspots improves your chances of getting a cab massively. |

You got that massive Hyundai Department store in MokDong! Lot's of restaurants inside, shopping, movie theaters ... The subway has a few stops in MokDong so you're not far from the foreign areas. TGIF, Bennigans, the stadium,... jump on the subway and it'll take you to Kimpo airport and E-mart and hundreds of others stores now occupying Kimpo airport. No matter where you are in seoul, the subway is the quickest and best way to get around. |

There is no money to be made doing privates.
Privates are illegal. |
