I'm about halfway through a contract at an adult hagwon. So far, it's an awesome job. I can dress casually, design my own material, and there are no student reports. I basically develop current event discussion materials and guide the conversation.
Of course the splits are hard but I accidentally (thanks to the constant noise in my neighborhood... adjacent a university AND ridiculously obnoxious neighbors) had a week where I could only sleep 4 hours a night, then 4 hours the following day between classes. And, it actually wasn't that bad. I think I could manage for quite some time on that schedule.
But, the neighborhood and obnoxious neighbors make maintaining any semblance of a regular sleep schedule impossible. So, after loads of complaints to the landlord and my manager they are going to get me a new room.
The only place we have looked at so far is on the 9th floor facing a main street with no adjacent neighbors BUT it is adjacent the elevator. What do you think, would the 9th floor be far enough from the street to get sleep during the day. The building is solid concrete old school Korean residential construction.
By comparison, the place I'm in now is converted office space with paper thin walls (and screaming neighbors adjacent the entrance of a university... kinda ridiculous they put me here and expected me to be able to sleep). |

Your problem is the elevator area, not the height. You will still hear outside, but it will sound farther away. If this really annoys you, then you will need to wear earplugs or leave the city life.
Instead of worrying about height, get a corner room or close to one if it is also near a busy intersecting street. |

| Why don't you check it out at night? If it's empty ask for a test drive, or just hang about in the hallway for a while. If you don't speak Korean and can't explain your presence to worried potential neighbors then make sure you have a phone to call someone to explain. |

How will that help? It will seem quiet, but when they rent it will be loud during the day. |

The OP needs to clarify, then; are they wanting a place with quiet during the night or the day? I took it as they wanted a solid 8 hours quiet at night but that might not be what they want.
If it is 8 hours at night then, for me, a ninth floor building is perfect. Who cares how close it is to the elevator, between 12 and 8 no one will use it unless the OP lives next door to a drug dealer or brothel. |

All apartments I have lived in with elevators are noisy near the elevator area. I guess it would depend on the number of floors and how many rooms are on one floor. There are even elevators in buildings that have a shopping mall appearance, meaning the floors are not separated with ceilings, so you see and hear people above and below you.
Also, everyday they have cleaning people along with the occasional maintenance guy or internet installer or mover/delivery or etc... It's not just the 1 tenant in each room that has to use the elevator.
I just do it by habit, get an apartment further from traffic areas and sit in the back of the bus for long trips so I don't have to deal with all crying babies and rude people coming and going during the ride. |
