I work at one of the top 3 and the level of English here is abysmal! |
Thanks for your comment.
Their level of English would be low from your point of view, mainly because they do not speak or write at a native level. Even if their English is not at a native or even a fluent level, the level of English for Korean employees is sufficient to carry out their duties. As each year passes, the level of English of Korean employees continues to improve. As a result, Kiwis long-term ambition to become a translator/editor fades away as he begins to grasp the reality of the situation. |
You are willing to argue that their English abilities are improving without offering any evidence which suggests this improvement is as fast as you claim it is. You also claim that Westerners have very limited Korean language skills without offering any evidence. How on earth did you do so well academically when you can't even argue with "trashy" esl teachers? I can only assume that you have lied about your background in a bid to give your opinions more credibility. Well contrary to your belief, that sort of arguement won't get you anywhere on this board. There are some bloody intelligent people who post here. Don't delude yourself into thinking your grade 6 level debating style can go unchallenged by posters on this board. Moron. |
Am I supposed to post links supporting my claims? Well Kiwiboy and you certainly haven't offered any solid evidence, except for your own personal experiences. |
You made the claim and you expect us to offer evidence to the contrary? How on earth did you do so well academically with this nursery school debating style? |

What about if they are working at a hakwon or at a school? Granted this is only my personal experience (but there has been a number of other posters in the past who have have had similar experiences). I have met or worked with about 40+ Korean English teachers. Of them all, how many had English abilities at a native level? None. How many had a fluent level? Two. How many could barely speak it or speak it only brokenly (despite the fact that their major was English) About 27-30. As for the rest I could just (only just) understand what they were saying due to the fact I only ever heard them speak Korean.
Granted this is not inclusive of all Korean English teachers and I am sure that there are some very good ones out there. However I am not alone in pointing this problem out. Other posters from time to time have pointed this out too.
It may be true that English is improving, but if these teachers are anything like the norm, it will improve very slowly indeed. |

For those of you who are keeping score, my score card has maneatinghorse slightly ahead of....ummm....everyone else(?) at this point.
Will someone save my ring-side seat while I go get something to drink? |
