Anyone else still waiting to be told if their contract will be renewed? My contracts up late February, but noone has mentioned anything about my contract being renewed for another year. Can I assume that silence means it won't be renewed? Or does the ole Korean "discuss it at the very last moment" apply here?

Cheers!

Here's a crazy idea. Why don't you ask your co-teacher, head English teacher, or other person at the school (principal, vice-principal)?

The agreement is between you and the school, not you and members of ESL forums.

Last year I didn't sign my new contract until early February.

I only signed mine earlier this year because my co teacher wanted to finish all his paperwork before the holidays started.

And he has the correct answer. Stop being passive-aggressive and actually ask your CT. What, do you want this forum to baby you?

OP, I'd like to make two points about your post. The first is that in Korea things often happen at the last minute. It's up to you to push the issue if you want to know something before the last minute.
The second point is that maybe they assume you want to stay and they want you to stay so what's the rush? When you approach your Korean teachers about what's happening, play it cool. Sometimes just the way you ask about things can make you sound "confrontational" to Korean ears. Play it cool, daddy-o.

Dude, open your mouth, insert chill pill. Repeat as often as necessary.

Honestly. I just got back from vacation today and there's noone at my school but me. When someone shows up I will definitely ask them. Thanks for that brilliant suggestion, but I can't ask them when they're not here, can I? It's not a huge deal. If my contract isn't renewed I'll get another job no problem. I had heard some things about Gepik winding down in some areas, so I was simply asking if anyone else is waiting on their school to let them know what's up. Sometimes the schools themselves don't know until rather late. Either way, it's no biggie....I've excellent qualifications and I'd probably prefer to move closer to Seoul. I was just asking a simple question. I know that desk warming sucks, and one likes to stay busy to pass the day. But if you've nothing constructive to contribute, move on to another thread.

Passive-aggressive. Rolling Eyes

Generally this. Depends though if you've ticked off or had a quarrel with someone in the course of the year.

Renewal is a game of brinkmanship.

You don't show your cards right away.

If you let them know you are desperate to renew then it leaves you no room for negociating better terms.

Not to debate, but I always thought that public school contracts were pretty set in stone. Maybe you can negotiate terms with hagwons, but is it possible for public schools to bend their contracts at all?

If you're hired under any of the varieties of EPIK, then the school is not your employer; you're assigned there by your employer. The employer is the Provinicial or Metropolitan Office of Education. And, no, there is no negotian regarding the terms of the contract in that program.

There may be a few public schools who have the authority and the funds to hire someone directly, but I find that doubtful.

Let's not discount the chance that the OP's supervising co-teacher is simply clueless about the adminstrative issues involved for the EPIK GET. The OP should request the renewal application and get the ball rolling himself. After all, the school principal doesn't have the authority to fire someone nor even to hire them. That honor is at the provinical/metro office of education level.
