Nah, there's no bluff to call because we don't know what the job's offered salary is.
Even a fancy department store in Gagnam is not going to pay you 5 mill a month unless you, as suggested, bust your ass and draw in tons of employees to your classes.
You'd be lucky to break 4. If it were a top company you might make it to 5. If you have an actual skill outside of speaking English you might clear more.
If you're making 6.5 with privates just stick with that. |

We all know the labor market conditions here in Korea. The profession...the salaries one might make....the hours..etc.
I can see making 5.0 million of you teach 80 hours a week. But who has the energy to work over 100 to do the same?
Even privates...if you work many...you have to travel back and forth from one to another....there is also a limit on the going rate. Still...even if you were lucky enough to find 15-20 people to pay 100K per hour for one hour a week....and I highly doubt it...I still think it's unrealistic in this economy....you might make over 5 to 10 million a month. Also, not every one is going to have regular classes every week.
Gone are the days of making 10-20 million a month teaching privates. |

Then maybe we should be laughing at you and not the other way around? |
be my guest. i love my job and i never have to worry about asking people on a forum if i should have accepted it or not. it's in a cutting edge field and even though i put in a lot of hours sometimes, it's in something i love and when you love your work and what you do it's not really "work" is it? |
If you love you job so much why are you trolling a lowly ESL forum? |
many teachers here seem to have a very low opinion about themselves... "lowly" esl forum? teachers are highly respected in many areas of the world you know.
and the awesome thing about being me is that i have no reason or desire to explain any of my actions to you. |

| Why don't you tell us about your job, wishfullthinkng, so that we too can aspire to something great? (I'm being serious here.) |

Wishfullthinking...
The guy is clearly on an ego trip...it is so obvious...don't mind him (or her.) The person has a low opinion of themself, it is obvious...or they wouldn't make the post in the first place.
The figures and the scenerio are unrealistic....the poster is looking for attention..and we are all guilty for giving both, the same, and audience in the first place. |

Wow. I had no idea that was even possible. I heard stories of backpackers making 6 million a month from privates (irregardless of visa status), but that was a while back. When were people making 10-20 million? What years? |

Almost EVERYTHING wishfullthinkng posts is an insult to someone else. Too bad, because I like to learn new information. He is an example of a person who makes this forum a worse place. BUT...everyone has the power to change. You can do it, wishfullthinkng! 화이팅! |

The figure is a purposely high to accentuate a point...however I have heard of nearly 10 million in the late 90s. Many of my friends were teaching in Korea at that time and gave me the lowdown then. It was extreme...and the reason privates are illegal here in Korea from 2000 onwards....teachers were charging outlandish rates and not delivering the goods. There were other porblems to boot. These are reasons that teaching is monitered closely here in Korea.
The point I am making is that the figure as well as the scenerio that the original poster is unrealistic. |

Wishfulthinking...No worries...I think this thread is getting cluttered up...it's very easy to misunderstand something.
Peace

here's an article from 2006 that kind of illustrates what soldier was saying about teachers back in the day being able to make major coin. when they were still a bit of a novelty and treated like celebrities.
http://www.businessweek.com/stories/2006-12-10/where-a-teacher-can-make-millions
and here's another similar one:
http://reganmian.net/blog/2009/10/25/korean-teachers-make-10-millionyear-by-producing-online-resources/
i couldn't find the link but there was a news story from last year where a teacher had set up an illegal pcbang-like study center that was very popular amongst the gangnam elite and was making around 100,000usd per month off of it but got busted and deported.
and world traveler, if someone is saying something ignorant i have no hesitation on calling them out on it. it's a hard knock life out there and i coddle no one. that said, i try to be helpful as much as i can on the forums, even if much of the time it sounds like me berating the person (because a lot of times it kind of is.)
edit: soldier, my bad. i thought you were referring to me. cheers! |

| I really doubt any company will pay you the 5 mil you are looking for. If that is your cutoff, I wouldn't even bother wasting my time interviewing. I'd stick with your privates. |
