| Now, the idea is that your renewal time off is to be taken "sometime during the first six months" of the new contract. Want to hear what the foreigner coordinator at the office of education told me? Well, here goes anyway: "A prudent person would've taken a day or two every month for the first six months." BULL! And what principal is going to approve a day off every single month? The genius at the big renewal meeting gave nobody any inkling whatsoever that such a stunt would be in the offing. |
Except thats not how it is since the two weeks are 14 consecutive days (weekends/holidays included). You cant take one here, a few there. Its a two week block. |
Exactly right. Yet another not thought-out policy implemented just for grins in Korea.

Okay, now you have the use it or lose it vacation dates. You also have shorter regular class weeks for the students because (technically, but not in reality) the kids aren't going to school on any Saturdays. That means that the kids have to make up those hours formerly done on Saturdays. That means shorter summer vacation. Basically, one month, four weeks, one lousy twelfth of one year. Do you think the school's going to actually close during that time? HAH! You have another think coming, friend. The school's going to want to continue to do the summer hagweon, er, camp classes. They're also not going to want you to be gone for three weeks straight.
Oh, they're also going to stick to the one week winter vacation bit. That's what their schedule has for the GET and that's what they expect. |
Pretty much. This is what I look forward to head butting over this coming summersix months after my renewal. |
And people wonder why a bunch of folks bailed immediately after the renwal meeting or just before the summer vacation. |

This changed as of the February 2012 contract. The EPIK renewal vacation is two weeks "to be taken prior to the end of the sixth month of the contract at the approval of your principal." |
Well that depends on the province you are in. Even though most of the provinces use a standard EPIK contract they have their own clauses in there as well. I just checked my contract (EPIK) and it says nothing about the sixth month whatsoever in regards to vacation time. |

| Forgive me if I'm wrong but I don't see that happening. Won't the re-signing time off bonus just be taken in the summer and the annual holiday be taken in the summer and winter? |
In the past, the renewal vacation dates were required to be taken in conjunction with the winter vacation at the end of the previous contract, giving the GET three weeks...

Seems like you were getting ripped off. My contracts have always had ten working days in the winter (plus eight in the summer) and an additional 2 weeks if you re-sign thus giving one 4 consecutive weeks off...where are you working that you only get one week winter vacation? |

My first school was like that with the initial principal (with the 10 days in summer, 10 in winter + 14 days...though never 4 consecutive weeks).
But these days, some GEPIK schools are doing 3 weeks of Winter Camp. With my current school I only had one week and a few days in change (not consecutive with the one week). Since I technically get my 20 days annual leave (and it's my first year with the school) I'm not in a strong position to complain. But next year with the extra 14 days...
The schools know there isn't much greener grass out there these days, so they're playing it to their advantage. But in some respects, I'm sure schools are hearing from the parents now that there's no school on Saturdays (sort of) and maybe more parents these days can't afford to send their kids to hagwons like they used to. The vacations are shorter now but our contracts stayed the same...creating the headbutting over our days off. |

Busan Metropolitan Office of Education. The EPIK contracts for those schools, commencing with 1st Semester of 2012, are as I stated. |

In that case I'm crossing off Busan on my list of places within Korea to work. I appreciate the heads-up.
