Seems like I am in the same position a few other people in this thread have been. I've sent my documents to my recruiter (Korean Horizons), who have passed them onto the IMEO. I didn't apply through EPIK, more or less straight to IMEO (through KH).

Anyway, whilst I wait on confirmation that my documents have been verified, I can't help but dread something going wrong. Sad How common is it for someone to get formally offered a position, and then stumble at the documents hurdle? I'm very impatient with these sort of things, and my recruiter did say it'd take at least another week (this was on the 10th). It is nerve racking though. Especially when it is so close to the time. Ideally, I could be getting on with some very important preparations.

Although, since you guys all applied through EPIK, I guess you are all worried about getting accepted by a province? Whereas, the Incheon education board have already formally offered me a position...

I don't even know if I should be worried. I've not had a decent night's sleep in weeks. Laughing

Finally heard back from my recruiter, saying I've been placed (in Chungbuk aka North Chungcheong province) and that the orientation dates are February 19th through 27th for Group 1, and the 20th through 28th for Group 2. I'm not seeing this on the EPIK website or facebook page though, this is just what I'm being told.

Congratulations Smile Thanks for the update mayorhaggar.

Don't worry Bearnana, I'm worried just as much as you. Although I think you're in a better position that I am, as I'm still waiting for a placement and have only heard the bare minimal. I'm checking my email about 5 times a day! Hopefully I'll have some new soon too.

Hopefully you will hear soon! People are still getting placed, though it sounds like more of provinces then specific cities. Still plenty of time. They keep reassuring that POE and MOE are still sending in their acceptances so fingers crossed for you!

For the Cert. of Residency, I didn't know I needed one until a week ago. Somehow that never pops up on the list of documents that your supposed to get! Is it a problem if it comes after I'm already there? It's not a serious issue for my mom to FedEx it to me when it arrives, but if the IRS take as long as it sounds like they will, I may be already working. Anyone know how that document works exactly?

Form 8802 sucks in every way! The tax dept at work had to walk me through, and help me figure out what articles to use in the perjury statement!

Thanks!

i have heard that all metropolitan placements are filled, so only provincial placements left.

i only found out my placement yesterday, so it looks like some people are still waiting.

i got placed in Gangwon-do in the end, which is what i requested. more pay, more vacation, 9 ski resorts and a beach - count me in anyday! Very Happy

I got an EPIK document from my recruiter yesterday that says that it's best to have the residency form with you when you come to orientation (probably not going to happen for me either) but if you receive it after you start working, you can submit it then and you'll get reimbursed for any income tax you've been paying. It's probably a bureaucratic pain to submit it late like that, but it's better than not getting reimbursed! Very Happy

Cool beans. I got what I requested too with Chungbuk. I've been reading a lot of EPIK teacher blogs by previous hires and seems like they all got placed in their first choice as well. Now I kinda wish I'd picked a more urban province, maybe Daejeon or something like that, but whatever, Chungbuk is centrally located and hopefully I get put in a decent sized city like Cheongju. Sounds like there's lots of national parks there too, hopefully the hiking is good. I used to live in San Francisco and it's a pretty cool city but I got kind of tired of how crowded it is, so I wanted somewhere quieter in Korea and picked Chungbuk. One person I've talked to who worked in Cheongju said she really liked it, good street food scene there.

I heard that same thing, but I was somehow confirmed for Daejeon after it was full. It is such a relief to finally get that confirmation, especially after spending a good chunk of time and money taking TESOL, document round-up, being nickel and dimed for this and that, etc. [/quote]

I know what you mean, that form is so simple, yet there is like 17 pages of instructions.

I just sent mine in today, because I wanted to save the $85 fee if I wasn't offered a job. To the best of my knowledge, this form allows you to not pay korean income tax. It proves you are a US citizen and you owe US taxes so they will not withhold anything.

I was told you have until your first paycheck to submit it, and worst case scenario is that it comes a little late, and your first check has korean tax deducted (3-4%) which can be reclaimed later (although I read it was a headache)

Now FYI, it was pitched to me that this whole EPIK thing would allow me to pay no US or Korean taxes. I found this out by chance, but you are still required to pay US tax and file a return for the time you work in Korea. But, as long as you make less than $90,000 (check) and stay in the country for at least 330 days (check (if you complete your contract)). you can exclude up to $90k of income.

So, in the end, we will have to file US taxes and then hopefully exclude the income.

This is only my understanding of what I have read at this website : http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/International-Taxpayers/Foreign-Earned-Income-Exclusion

Hi guys,

I received notification from my agent at Gone2Korea that my status has been updated to recommended.

I was just wondering what the next step is from here,

How does it work?

Cheers

Finally got my contract and NOA today, and sent them off to the consulate for the visa. Hope it's going smoothly for the rest of you.

FYI the EPIK website finally has info about the orientation locations and dates, go to epik.go.kr then click the EPIK logo on the left, then look for Group 1 and Group 2 listed under "What's New."

@James 89

Congrats! I'll see you at Orientation in Jeonju!

@deltaskelta

That's what I've been hearing. I hope that it won't take 2-3 months! That would be ridiculous for the amount we are paying for that form! More than the background check!

@alexorange

The waiting game continues. The next thing you will hopefully hear is that the POE, I hear all the MOE's are full up, has approved your application and you are officially accepted. After that you will need to do the pre-orientation online.
