I was told by a friend that his friend from back home is coming to work at his hagwon. I was then told this friend is only going to stay for a month or two to have an "adventure" and then take off with the flight money and a couple of checks. I find this terrible. The hagwon has been good to my friend, and the friend of friend would be working at a new franchise the hagwon is opening up.
Based on his personality and his comments he does not seem to care about how this will effect the teaching community or the hagwon. |

This is the reason that many hagwons have a 10-day delay between end of the pay period and actually getting paid.
They don't lose much of anything if the teacher runs or gets fired early (other than being short staffed for a while) - they have about 700k-800k worth of work as a buffer.

There are no costs to the hagwon for the visa confirmation number application. The actual visa costs are born by the applicant (when they apply for the visa at the consulate).
The recruiter usually has to find a replacement or refund the recruiters "fee" to the school if the "teacher" doesn't work out for a fixed period (usually 3-6 months).
The value of a flight to Korea is on the order of 700-800k won. If the employer has a 10-day hold back then they have those 10 days of unpaid salary to recoup the losses incurred when the teacher "runs".

And, a fellow teacher/s pick up the slack until the replacement comes. Some headache but not really much loss to the boss. |

What a short sighted loser. So this person is going to spend the time and money getting the job and visa processed, thereby forgoing other immediate long term employment opportunities. Then they're going to fly over here and WORK for two months for 'an adventure'? Some adventure.
And then, assuming the school doesn't hold the return ticket as they often do, they're going to do a runner? Brilliant. And then have to explain this stunt and the hole in their CV if and when they go for a job back home.
This 'friend' sounds like a real tool. |

Such a terrible spot for you to be in. I would do nothing. If you send an anonymous letter, or tell management, you could get mixed up into it in a very unpleasant way. Both of these guys are not very good people in my opinion. I would try to avoid them as much as you can, while pretending you don't know what is going on, or at least in your mind, act as if he's not going to follow through with his plan, and is going to stay.
You can use the information you have to mentally prepare yourself for when he leaves, as you may have to pick up his slack, etc, but I really wouldn't make an issue out of it, and make problems for yourself.
Who knows, maybe he ends up staying. It's not your problem, it is the problem of the guy who recommended this person. I wouldn't consider that guy as a good friend to have. Bad enough, he's helping screw over the school, and it's teachers, but he has told you, and put a trmendous weight on your shoulders.
Depending on your relationship with the guy, maybe you can talk with him, and assure him that you won't tell anyone, but you think it's very wrong, and not to mention it to you again. To agree with him that he never told you anything, and to not discuss it with him in any way.
These people are so self centered that they don't care about anyone else. |
