I haven't been let go but the boss is a snake and intensely interested in lowering costs and getting out of paying a full years benefits. So, I'm planning and looking to confirm and add to what I think I know. I've completed over 6 months of the contract.

1. School required to give a 30 day written notice or pay for those days.

2. I should double check to make sure that Pension, NHIC and taxes are all paid up.

3. I lose severance and airfare.

Am I entitled to anything else?? Forgetting or missing anything??

If everything does fall apart, do I have to go to immigration or just finish my month, hopefully collect my money and get the hey out??

Whatever happens, I will be leaving Korea once this job is done.

There had to be some perceived reason you got canned. Your thoughts on why that was?

dodge7, if it's someone's pet, which you don't know, that person may miss it and you've caused more harm than good. since it has a collar, let it be and keep an eye on that area to see if the dog stays around.

It's not an entitlement, but you should get a LOR just in case.

You should get notice or pay in lieu. There ARE exceptions to that rule (termination for just cause).

Unless you want to get dinged for unpaid premiums and contributions you may not want to check the NHIC or pension.
If you have had deductions taken from your salary for them then you should check them. (file for your pension refund at the same time).

If you are leaving Korea and not returning then there probably isn't much you can do if you don't get notice or there are problems with your pension.
You can file a grievance/complaint with the appropriate boards (medical, pension or labor) and have someone act as your agent but typically the decision won't be in your favor (hence why hagwons get away with this stuff).

If you were planning to stay then it would be a different matter.

I'm in the same boat and just up to the seven month mark. My contract ends (terminated, whatever they say) on the 28th Feb. So with me me getting paid on the 17th each month means what ?

I get Feb pay plus some of the extra days up to 28th?

With that fine I got ( I hate to bang on ) and the loss of severance, bonus flight money. I'm leaving Korea at a loss by the looks of things.

As stated, I was not canned. Although I agree the title is a little confusing.

I'm just preparing for the worst. Given my hagwons history, it is possible that they will do their best to avoid a teacher completing their contract. From what I understand, if a hagwon wants to get rid of you they will whether it's ethical or not.

Tom--
Yes, I've had deductions taken from my salary so I'll check on them. I would demand at least a 30 day notice and would likely stick around Korea to make sure it happens.

newb--
LOR is a great idea, especially if I'm forced to stay longer.

Thanks to everyone else
