I'm sure the Korean people that already hate English teachers love these videos - they prove a lot of the bad things that the media portrays teachers, and that's really unfair to a lot of good people in the ROK trying to make a difference.
Seriously, there should be a loser filter on Youtube. |

His videos are cringe worthy.
Everything down to the neanderthal drone of his voice and his claim that he didn't have culture shock... clearly he had some culture shock or at least some huge misunderstandings about how things work here. |
Agreed. I started to watch one of his videos but had to give up after a couple of minutes. Nauseating.
Some guy's spent a little bit of time in Korea and then he's turned to making videos preaching and thinking he is giving everyone the straight dope. Ridiculous.
*SIGH*

True, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Hogwan pulled some BS on him, too.
It's odd because I've met many "lifers" who were similar to the guy in the video.
They were socially really "off", and they were edgy. Back home their employment options are almost nill due to their problems.
Yet they can somehow survive in Korea -not always an easy place- for 10, 15+ years.
Amazing how some people with personal problems can survive in Korea for a very long time, while others last only a couple months.
It's weird how that goes. |
Well, just consider they are outcasts back home so they are used to it. I've met a lot of good looking, highly qualified, 20- somethings who came here because they wanted to teach in an "adventurous setting". Even though they were every hakwon owners dream employee, they usually didn't last long because at the end of the day all foreigners are considered an "outcast" in some way or another in Korea. The young and stable people just aren't used to that kind of atmosphere. A guy who has been ostracized in his home country will feel no different here, except he will be taking home a paycheck and have housing provided.
The lifers I've met that are stable and healthy people usually have thick skin about this and just get on with their business. I love it here but I couldn't stay forever because I guess my skin isn't that thick at the end of the day. |

The first point is a good and valid one. If you're used to being "in the mainstream", Korea's going to be tough because in Korea you're an Outsider as a foreigner.
As for lifers being stable.... some are, a lot aren't.
I've met some pretty unhappy and down lifers. It's sad because they're basically trapped here.
I haven't met many lifers who I would describe as happy.
Thick skin helps, but I've met a couple who survive only by detaching themselves from reality. |

I share some of this guy's sentiments but not all of them, as he goes a bit too far with his thoughts. His earlier videos are alrght actually, but then he just goes off the deep end by the end of his time here. I do get frustrated like him, but never to this degree. Some his comments about Koreans are pretty bad, as well as the EFL community.
It does take a thick skin to be here or try to adapt somehow. I guess this guy couldn't do it and bounced. |

| There's no telling what the full story is. It's pretty obvious though the guys a lout. Sounds like he was making good money and got fired for probably good reasons. I have no need for louts and I don't think anybody else does either. |

He's no exception. I've heard many people say the same things after living in Korea. Nothing unusual there.
He got dicked around and wants everyone to know. |

Meh. I wouldn't be so surprised if he's from the Prairie Provinces. BTW, I'm an Anglo-Quebecker from Montreal. But yeah, his attitude is very unpleasant.
Based on my experience, you need to have some kind of ultristic attitude to work in Korea as an English teacher.
I still remember the moment when I had quit my GEPIK position in Anseong. Right before I moved out of my place, I cleaned my one-room apartment very thoroughly and left a box of fresh Japanese satsuma on the floor as a sign of apology to my landlord. |

I can see myself meeting this guy at a bar in Itaewon.
Me: So they fired you to avoid paying? wow, sorry man
Him: Yeah, and they were supposed to give me notice
Me: I'm sorry, nobody deserves that
Him: Yeah F@#$ Korea, I hate Korean people
Me: Yeah, hmmm, well I guess I would feel the same way, maybe when you go home you will have more time to reflect on this
Him: So I trashed the apartment and I haven't payed my bills for 6 months
Me: Ohhhhh, huh, yeah hehe, maybe you should pay your bills, the replacement might get stuck with them
Him: Nah F@!# that and F#@$ Korea, anybody that is stupid enough to come here deserves the bill
Me: I don't know, you came here...maybe you should pay the bills
Him: ##% that, I'm even going to leave a live rabbit in my apartment
Me: A live rabbit...? I don't know, your boss probably isn't going to clean your apartment. I can see your mad, but maybe there is another way to get your point across
Him: No @#$$% #%@$%^@$%^ and I'm putting that @!#$# up on youtube too !#$#@!%@#$%@$^!!!!!
Me: Nice meeting you, best of luck in Canada
I keep thinking about how he is a sketchy looking guy that hates Korea. If he stuck it out for a few more months he probably would have ended up with a hot Korean girlfriend whose name he would never learn to pronounce correctly. |

I'd like to know exactly what his Korean hogwan did to him.
They did something obviously... probably pulled some of their Hogwan games, which didn't sit well with a very assertive person who was probably a bit off center to begin with.
I feel for the guy. I know what it's like to be dicked around by the Koreans and some of the shady people who work in the Hogwan biz.
I don't know if I'd go so far as to release a live rabbit into my apartment -my revenge fantasizes were more along the lines of knee capping than bunny rabbits. |

Some people want to be fired. They don't want to live in Korea, but don't want to be a quitter, so they make a problem in order to be fired.
I've also seen it in Canada. Basically, a co-worker was having marital problems, so directed his anger at his job - he was fired too. |
