|

I'm due to finish my contract in a little over 3 weeks (well, supposedly - see below) and have a couple of questions.
Firstly, a probably quite stupid one about severance - what deductions will be made to my severance pay? Will it be tax, pension and insurance or just tax? Can anyone who's decent with numbers estimate what I can expect to receive for final month's pay+severance on 2.1 per month? I've guestimated about 3.9 (1.85+2.05).
Also, a stranger situation. My boss has come to me recently and asked me when I am finishing my contract and going home. So not only does my boss not know when my year is up, but I presume he hasn't booked my flight home yet either. He's been a decent boss all year - paying on time and so on, but this has worried me a bit - I can't help but feel a, "you book the flight, I'll give you the money...honest" situation coming on. Can anyone suggest a good way to get it sorted without pissing anyone off? When I've asked him about finish dates in the past (so I can make plans when I get home) he's been dismissive and refused to be drawn on it, and now I think I know why.
It's probably worth mentioning I'm coming back to Korea at the beginning of April (job or no job) and my boss knows this.
Thanks in advance for any help. |

| Why don't you ask your boss first? |

| You're right in your guestimate. Only tax should be taken out of the severance. |

Thanks, friendlydaegu, I thought as much.
Newb, to be honest, the boss' English isn't great and I really can't be bothered to spend half an hour trying to make myself understood when I can just ask on here. Plus the other time I asked him this kind of thing (about payslips for proof of tax payment) he was pretty much clueless. |

| Well why dont you just say "here is the date I am leaving, can you book my flight home either this week or next, thanks" While your at it confirm when they will pay you the severance and the last months pay and how much it it. get it confirmed. if there is an issue with the boss ask a korean-english teacher their for their help. you wont piss off. |

Your boss isn't going to know the exact dates of when all his employees leave, but he has the dates on file. Also, don't expect your boss to just book your ticket and come to you and say 'flights booked, you'll be flying on...' You have to discuss it with him. I sat down with my boss and we booked them together. That way we both knew what was going on. Just tell your boss you would like to talk to him about your flight home, it's no big deal really.
I even managed to organise a flight with my boss that got me a week in Japan as a lay over on my way back home!! |
