True but having a degree puts you in the top half of the country doesn't it. In terms of background/brains etc. You'd have thought the top 50% in the richest country in the world would be able to carve out a decent life for themselves without having to try and become a member of the 15th. You can see why those developing country 3d workers would be puzzled |

| In the U.S., only one fourth of adult males have a four year college degree. Having that degree, no criminal record, and the ability to pass a drug test puts you in the top 20% at least. |

There are jobs in the U.S.; however, some areas are more economically depressed. If a person is willing to move to a different section of the country, there are jobs to be found. Maybe (some) recent grads are ignorant to the ways of the world; I dunno.
Ed, think about the number of e2s issued to Americans as a percentage of the population: one in thirty thousand. But all it takes is for a tiny, minuscule portion of the U.S.population to come here and the (niche) market is totally flooded, especially with South Korea having the lowest birthrate in the world. |

I agree with this. The difference between moving within the US and taking an EFL job in Korea has to do with start up costs. You have the security of having a job in hand before moving, and you're not paying for the airfare or housing. In the US, hr reps don't take you seriously unless you're already in town, plus you'd have to pay a lot of money for housing and sign a contract, all without the guarantee of a job. |

I see Andong National University is still hiring. I guess their previous job ad requiring a 20-page application (http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?p=2843882#2843882)for a job paying 2.3 million didn't yield enough applicants. On the other hand, they now want people with an MA to work for 2.2 in a small city, down from 2.3 in their previous ad.

Here's a school, a language institute with working hours of 8:40 to 4:40 where the students are "middle-aged", that wants education majors to work for 2.1 to 2.3 million per month.

I'm quite surprised by all the posts like these. I know loads of people who fit this description yet currently work low-level jobs at hotels, retail, restaurants, hospitals, etc. The assumption that a degree automatically brings financial success may have been true in the 80s and 90s, but not in today's economy. It seems that the only people guaranteed a job now studied either finance, medicine, or engineering. Anything other than that, and it's slim pickings. (And the cost of going back to school for any of the big 3 fields is a massive deterrent in itself.)
For me personally, I graduated with a degree in urban and regional studies. I worked 3 different temporary positions for local non-profits with this degree, which is more than a lot of graduates can say, but nothing long-term ever materialized. I'd need to earn a masters degree to enter a career path in urban planning. I even applied a couple years ago and was accepted to all five universities. However, considering the amount of debt I was already in and the additional amount I would need to finish grad school, it wasn't worth the risk at that time.
In short, many if not most people who come here to teach do it for economic reasons. I'm a bit insulted by the poster who suggested that people are in unfortunate circumstances because they're ignorant to the ways of the world. Yes, the U.S. is the richest country in the world according to our total GDP, but it is also an incredibly unequal country where the opportunity for upward mobility has greatly diminished. |

This ad is really something. You get to teach for 36 hours and 20 minutes over six days, compared against 30 hours in a typical hagwon and maybe 15 hours in a typical public school, all for the right to make 2.1 million won per month in Ansan.
I hope nobody takes this.

I paid about 1/2 that for a custom built, 4-bedroom house on 5 hectares in the Philippines. It'll cost about that for a new, 3-bedroom house in a gated subdivision in cities like Cebu.

It makes lots of sense for other Asian workers to take those jobs, even at 1/2 that wage (800k is still common enough) they are still money ahead (average wages in the Philippines are about $40/week in the NCR and $25/week out in the provinces.
Even in Thailand, a certified teacher (education degree) only makes about $100/week.
