Hello all. I am currently planning my return to South Korea (around September 2013), once my wife has completed her MA in Korean Translation Studies. Anyhow, I have a few things to consider for my return including the use of my Samsung Galaxy S3.

I would love to bring my Galaxy S3 with me to Korea and use it in Korea. Would I be able to bring my phone with me and just insert a Korean SIM? Do I need to unlock it and is this possible to unlock in Korea? My wife has an iPhone 5 and we would like to bring this to Korea as well. Would we be able to get this phone working in Korea?

I would appreciate any advice from other members.

If you ask your carrier to unlock they usually will if you don't owe any more on your contact. Yes you can use a Korean sim as long as the phone's are unlocked. But keep in mind Korea has different frequencies for their LTE service so you'll only be able to use 3G service. Smile

Hi John

I'm not very savvy with my phone, so could you explain what I will need to know about my galaxy 3?

I will be visiting Korea for just a few weeks, but I want to know how to use my phone for it's online functionality. Do i just search for a wifi hot spot and connect that way?

Thanks John for the quick reply. Much appreciated. I have decided to pay off my remaining contract for the phone and keep it on me for my short trips back to the UK and get a UK SIM card for PAYG. I will be getting a Korean S3/S4 (if the 4 comes out later this year) and then will use this in Korea. Probably best. I will also have to shell out a little bit for my wife's mobile to pay off the remaining contract.

Another option is sell the UK phone before you leave, get one in Korea and use it with a UK PAYG sim while home (what I do). You pay full price for the handset here but it comes unlocked, at least my GS3 did on KT / Olleh. Not sure about 4G but I was definitely getting data service on it while in the UK.

If you do plan to use a UK phone in Korea then get it unlocked while still in the UK if at all possible.
