| There are watch/clock shops in virtually every neighborhood I've lived in. Usually costs 3-5,000 KRW and takes about 2 minutes. Just keep an eye out. If all else fails, you can check the watch/jewelry section at an Emart/Home Plus-type place. |

I took my watch to Homeplus and asked the man to change the battery.
"Battery change-uh" he said.
"Neh" I muttered trying to bridge the gap between our cultures to which he had previously contributed a rather significant amount.
After five minutes of tinkering with the watch and changing the battery he informed me:
"Not battery problem".
"Shit".
Turns out my watch is f@cked.  |

They always charge more for expensive watches. It's like owning a land rover and paying $4500 for changing a head gasket. Labor goes up when the brand or quality is higher. Sucks though. My grandfather left me his Rolex a few years ago, and most places I checked wanted $300 and up to clean it (automatic). I waited and went through the military post exchange, paid $75.00 last month. |

$300 is pretty standard to have a Rolex cleaned by an authorized Rolex dealer. |

If you don't get your fancy brand name watch done at an authorized dealer, your warranty is no longer valid. 300 dollars a battery change and you'll blow a thousand dollars in 5 years just on batteries.
It's crazy. You are better off with a $10 Casio. |

Not everyone can wear a Casio. I'm allergic to most metals, and can only wear solid gold (plating wears off.) When I was in the hospital as a child, I had to wear a bracelet telling doctors that I had a stainless steel allergy. I'm jealous. There are a lot of really nice (and less expensive) watches that I'd love to be able to wear, but I can't unless I put stickers on the case and paint clear nail polish on the buckle. I tried doing that when I was younger, but it was a real pain and I often forgot to repaint the buckle and would get a rash.
I have 4 watches, but they're all fairly dainty, because a chunky watch made of solid gold would cost at least 2/3 of my yearly salary. 2 of my watches have leather bands, anyway, but I found out that the buckle on one of them was plated when some rubbed off, so I have to find a jeweler on my next trip home who can replace it with a solid one, which is annoying and costly. |
