I would just like to know what happens for example if pay day is say the 10th of every month and you arrive on the 16th, does that mean you wont get paid for almost 2 months? Or would you get paid for the following month for the 3 weeks you have worked? Any advice would be much appreciated Smile

Depends upon what you work out with your boss. There's no one single answer.

In many cases, if you start on the 16th you wouldn't get paid until the 10th of the next month, but you might get an advance with it being your very first time and all. You'd probably get paid for the portion of the month that you worked.

The main thing to remember is that it's between you and your boss/school/HR department/whatever. Nobody on here can give you "THE" answer.

LEGALLY (under the labor standards act) they have to pay you once every month so you should be paid on the 10th for the partial month.

How much you get paid may vary from employer to employer.
Some (a large majority of hagwons) will pay on the 10th for the previous calendar month so you would probably get paid for the 2 weeks between the 16th and the end of that calendar month.

How they calculate pay for partial months can also vary.
Some will calculate based on work days but a large majority will count days of the month (since you are a salaried employee) so 15/31 days in the pay period and not 10/22 days worked.

Thank you. I wondered how it worked because I had read that if you arrived just before payday, you wouldnt get paid until the following month so effectively it would be 4+ weeks before being paid. That wouldnt be too bad but to have to possibly wait 7 weeks before being paid would be quite a stretch.

Have had this happen a few times....generally you'll get a half (or whatever percentage of the month you worked) payment first time around. If it's a hagwon though there likely won't be any set policy....maybe they pay you a full month's pay 30 days after you start and then put you on the same payment schedule as everyone else after that for example. Ask the boss for the most reliable answer. Extremely unlikely you'll have to go 7 weeks without pay though.

At my first hagwon, I was paid a prorated amount for the fraction of the month I had worked.

At my second hagwon, it was the same as the first, except the pay was drastically reduced because of "on the job training" even though I was in the classroom teaching from day one and no such deduction was in my contract.

At my third (current) hagwon, I started on the 20th and I'm getting paid on the 20th of each month.
