For heaven's sake, get insurance coverage. It's not only cheap, its the law. You don't want to find yourself in the situation in which you need to be hospitalized. Accidents do happen. Don't be naive. Your boss won't pay your hospital bills if you ever find yourself in that situation. You need to look out for yourself.

For heaven's sake, get insurance coverage. It's not only cheap, it's a mandatory requirement. Your boss is not only breaking the law by not registering you, he or she wants to discourage you from taking sickdays.

Trust me, you don't want to be hospitalized without insurance. And don't be naive. Your boss won't pay your hospital bills if you ever find yourself in that situation.

You must look out for yourself.

And in any case, the NHIC will track you down you down for backpayments if you end up being covered later. When I was with GEPIK in 2010, the school got a phone call that I wasn't covered because I owed 2+ YEARS of back-payments. I gave them the phone number of my previous boss, who was called down to the local NHIC accounting office for a friendly chat with me, my co-teacher, and a gruff-looking government official. The boss was forced to make up for one year of full contributions (I showed paystubs proving he had been deducting it without paying NHIC)... but I was still stuck for the other time-frame (total was 800,000 won or so). The NHIC called back again 3 months later when they discovered I owed from a few missing months in 2004! Another few hundred from my pocket. So, yeah, it's definitely good policy to check that you're always covered... ignorance is not bliss.

I took the challenge and called the number. Also, because I was worried. I called the NHIC office because I never got a booklet! The lady said I do have NHIC. Again, no booklet. So I think that must be rare.

I asked my coworker last night if she had the booklet. She had no idea what I was talking about (American). She actually did go the hospital a few months ago because she fainted at work. They took care of her so I assumed everything was all good. But I am thankful for double checking my status. Call the office people!

The booklet is kind of like an insurance card, but it is redundant. A hospital can punch in your ARC# into their computer to verify you are registered and complete the billing.

I have the NHIC insurance and booklet now and recouped around 680,000 won in medical bills. The pension office hasn't contacted me yet. I'm wanting to handle my pension stuff at the end of my current contract in August so I can take my previous employer, Wonderland, before the Labor Board and get the 2,000,000 won they still owe me in wages, etc, without having to worry about being late for work at my current school.

You shouldn't have paid for 2004. The NHIC legally loses the ability to collect after three years, so you should have just told them to go away. Instead you volunteered money, you are very generous.

I paid in full while I was there, 409,000 won. I didn't tell them where I worked or anything. But when I got to work, my boss said they had called her around 1 o'clock (while I was getting the CT scan). She apologized that I didn't have insurance and said she's going to provide me with national health insurance. I don't know how Joyfull Hospital even knew where I work, and I was very surprised that they contacted her.

Do you recall flashing them your ARC card? That's when they found out where you work and who to call.

In a follow-up visit, the interpreter/chaplain said he looked up my school on Google maps, and called the number displayed on the outside wall/windows of my hagwon. He used to live in my town. During the first visit, while I was in the waiting room, he asked of I worked at the big middle school here, and I told him that I work across the street at a hagwon, so he used the middle school as a point of reference on Google maps.
