Have any of you managed to get a same-day seat upgrade on a flight from the U.S. to Korea (or back)? What did you pay? Would it be worth it to buy a better seat up-front, or is coach decently comfortable on major airlines' international flights? Thanks. |

Never upgraded a seat, but economy class is really dependent on the airline-- Generally speaking, asian carriers have good service (Korean/Asiana/JAL/Singapore), modern fleets with decent chairs, pitch, food/drink, and entertainment. US-based airlines do not. Make sure you know which carrier you'll actually be on. YOu might have a ticket with a US-based airline, but actually fly on an asian plane or vice-versa.
If you're on a non-asian airline, you might want to upgrade. Many posts in this forum on good/bad trans-Pacific airline experiences.
I've also found that flying an asian airline will also get me that exit row seat a lot easier than flying with an american one, at no extra cost(!!). Big difference on a 12-15 hour flight. |

There is, on many Asian carriers and depending on the aircraft, a middle option - YL class.
Business class seats. Economy class service.
Other than that, exit rows and bulkhead seats usually offer lots of leg room and there is usually ample shoulder room as well. Exit seats on 747s usually have about 10' between you and the bulkhead if you get the mid-cabin ones.
I am not a small person and I find the seating in economy on the Korean and Singapore 777s are comfortable.
My prefered carriers for trans-pacific flights include: Korean, Singapore, Thai and Cathay.
Korean, Sing and Thai are using their a380s on some transpac routes.
If you are coming from the east coast then Emirates may be a nice option if you don't mind routing through Dubai. They also use the a380.
