My US passport is set to expire in a little over 8 months. My present contract is up in 4 months. I hope to stay on with the school for another year after a couple weeks to fly home and visit family (still have to negotiate that).
My questions are:
1.) How long will it take to get another passport?
2.) Will I lose all of my present passport pages?
3.) If I cannot get my passport back before the end of my contract will I still be able to fly home to see family?
4.) Is this process a big pain the arse? |

You don't need to get a passport card unless you want to. The card is for use in lieu for areas which accept it for cross-border transit to/from the US. Your actual passport, of course, is definitely good for such use.
You should also request extra pages at the same time as they are now a lot more expensive than they used to be for adding extra pages to an existing passport. They were free, but now you have to pay. |

Lucky you. I paid a whopping 370 USD for an Oz one last year. Plus 30 bucks for pics, courier fee to get the thing back to me....ends up getting up near $420 or something. Guarding the thing like gold, which when comparing weight it may actually be more expensive than. |

You still pay in US dollars. The passport is processed in the US, not Seoul. The money order isn't too difficult as long as you can get to a bank before it closes. I went to KEB on one of my days off and it was pretty easy. I already had an account there and they speak English (went to the one in Itaewon).
The courier was a bigger pain because although the guy on the phone spoke English, they guy who picked up my application didn't. But I did this during the winter vacation and no English speaking teachers were here to help translate.
But it all worked out. Only took a week and a half. Courier cost 8,000 won (total) to bring it to the embassy and later to give you your new passport. You pay in cash up front when he comes to pick up your application. I used Ilyang (one of the recommended couriers on the embassy website). I'm sure the other one would have been fine, too, but they were having problems with all the snow at the time. |

| How does one transfer their E2 visa over to a new US passport while still teaching in Korea? Do you have to report it to immigration, get the Korean gov't to print a new visa to stick in the new passport, etc? |

Yes, you're required to go to immigration, within two weeks of issuance of the new passport. Fill out a simple form & present both passports & your ARC. They may give you a new sticker, or maybe just a stamp, or maybe nothing at all in your new passport. |

Your ARC replaces the visa sticker in your passport. You don't need a new sticker.
You can update your passport by fax to immigration (as long as it's within 14 days of receiving the new passport). Scan your ARC, your new passport, and print out a general application form, fill it out, and fax the application and scans to immigration.
Note: I went the fax route because I was close to renewing my contract anyway, and didn't want to make two trips to immigration.
When I did go to immigration a couple days ago, I brought both passports (expired one and new one) just in case, but I don't think he even looked at my old passport. He just put an extension of sojourn sticker in the new one (because I was renewing).
Not sure how close you are to the end of your contract, but if it's a ways off, you may want to have both passports if you travel abroad. But aside from that, your ARC is all that matters. |
