Haha, I love this. It's like a summer camp. It would be funny to see these people in 6 months after their soju-riddled eyes have been damned by the constant screaming of 10 year old Korean children.
Christ I am glad I don't teach kids anymore. |

Look at all of those bright eyed, bushy tails soaking up the 'culture'. Looks like they will fit right in if they continue that newbness. |

What a waste of time. Hanbok and drums have about as much to do with Korean culture as Pilgrim hats have to do with American culture.
Better use of time would be helping people deal with the differences in consumer practices, eating habits, gift giving expectations, understanding how to function in a hierarchical organization, etc. |

I agree. But you know how much Koreans love a good photo opportunity. Clean cut young foreigners in hanboks playing drums is the EPIK publicity departments wet dream. It's all about image here.

i'd bet that "orientation" ended up in drunken nakedness. think about it. take a bunch of 20 somethings, make it so they can't "chill out" for a month so as to awaken the life force within. then have everyone tested for std's and given a clean bill of health. then break any connection to normalcy they once had by making them go through all sorts of "cult" like excercises under the pretense of "team building". it has all the makings of a combination brainwashing/swingers party. |
You have a perverted way of thinking. I like it. |

They take what they can get I guess. Hotter people have more life options (sad but true), and are hence more likely to stay in their home countries.
There is the fear of possible molestation etched on the psyche of many...which leads to the request for a female teacher. With more applicants than open positions, schools can afford to be selective.
Look at this ad I saw on Dave's:
Quote: |
Hi.
My current female teacher is finishing her contract at the end of this month.
I have received many male teacher's resume.however
A female teacher is required for this job opening.
so I want female applicants to apply for this opening.
salary 2,1, encouraging money 200,000 and maximum travel fare is 100,000 won.
if you want to talk to my teacher, i will let you know.
thank you.

Males need to anonymously email this sexist pig and tell him off! Women should stay away from these ads as you'll probably be sexually harassed. |

Mixed races and mixed looks. Less of one type of discrimination, I guess. But, where are the older people? Guess, ageism hasn't been taken off the list yet. |

I'm pretty sure we are all being a bit sarcastic. I'm sure there were people cringing at doing those 'cultural' things, but then again there were probably some that enjoyed it for the novelty. To go even further, there were surely those (we all know the type) that revelled in it and will go on in their first year to tell anyone that will listen how cultured they are and spout off how much they know about Korea.
As far as the drinking thing goes, I wonder if they are still trying to put all of the NETs on lockdown within the compound like SMOE did several years ago. That didn't quite happen completely (some people still snuck off and there were some problems that were serious enough for people to get sent packing). Strangely enough, I do remember seeing the K coordinators/helpers carrying bags full of mekju to their rooms on a couple of occassions at night. I guess they were exempt from the no alcohol policy. |
