It was hyperbole. So what exactly do you object to? Are you objecting to anything? What point are you trying to make about people being 'haters?' Are you saying you think people shouldn't say rude things about celebrities on an inernet forum? That you disapprove of people doing that? Is that what you're saying? |
Is it ever possible for you to just stop being a wanker 24/7?
Jeez, I read a LOT of forums and rarely do I run into someone with such tiny manhood insecurity issues. You do not have to be argumentative for the sake of being argumentative.
As for Simon and Martina . . . no need to hate. They are successful at what they do and they found a niche in Korea outside of ESL which is something many others on here are looking for. Good for them. |

There's no place for their idiocy in the classroom. Besides, they make foreigners look like fools with bad hair and stupid fashion sense. Or are you his hair stylist? |

. And even though they have both lived here for several years now and often interview Korean singers who don't speak English, neither of them have learned enough Korean to ask even simple questions in Korean during their interviews. I guess it's good they've found a way to be somewhat successful, but I can't say I have much respect for them at all. |
I didn't know that about Martina and Simon but now I do I actually respect them a little bit more. |
You respect them more for not learning Korean even though it would help them do their work better and connect more closely with the celebrities they supposedly are fans of and want to learn about? Aren't you a language teacher, Edward? Don't you think people
should learn a language if they have sufficient cause to do so? Isn't you wife Korean? I always get a feeling from your posts that you think you think Korea and her language is too beneath you for you to bother learning much about either, that because you come from a Western nation you and other Westerners do not need to learn this "little language" that is Korean. Please do correct me if I'm wrong.
Yes, Korea is not as developed as most Western nations and it's true that a lot of Koreans want to learn English. Nevertheless, Korea is a member of the OECD and has one of the largest economies in the world. And, considering that most Koreans don't speak English, I would think that if your chosen career path involves talking to Koreans who cannot speak English, you'd, I dunno, bother to learn more Korean. Especially if you purport to love Korean culture as much as Martina and Simon do. |
I like them and respect them, they went from teaching English in Korea to only making youtube videos about K-pop and other things about Korea in their apartment, to having their own studio in Hongdae with 2 assistants. They did all of this without learning a lot of Korean. So, what about not learning enough Korean has hurt them? Furthermore, their videos aren't geared to Koreans, they are geared to people outside of Korea who want to know more about their favorite artist or what living in Korea is really like. It's not like they don't know any Korean and I'm sure that is why they have a Korean girl working for them now. You can learn about the culture and still not be able to speak the language well.
Most of the time they are making fun of some of these K-pop videos and how stupid they can be sometimes. I really don't see a problem with them, they are giving a positive imagine to foreigners in Korea, so that is a plus for me. |
Like many other expat bloggers in Korea, they are paid to promote products. But only QiRanger will admit it.

He deserves respect for posting that disclaimer. If only all of the others would follow suit.
Simon and Martina are paid to promote Korea and teaching in Korea. For that, do you get the truth or do you get what the advertisers who pay them want you to hear? |
This. Those who say there is nothing harmless in what they're doing often don't realize they are bought and sold by the govt. There is nothing wrong with this, unless they don't disclose this on their website (last I checked they do not). |

I think everyone who read this thread and managed not to click on the link taking them to the doofus duo (I, unfortunately, was exposed to them by someone at work.) should give themselves a pat on the back. It's that kind of will power the world needs more of.

So the Korean gov't is sponsoring them in some way? To promote Korea?
Or is it some hagwon association? Wow, I missed my calling.
I don't get it. How are they promoting teaching in Korea?

To me, it's like a doctor who hasn't properly studied anatomy. She can identify certain body parts and can make it seem like she knows what she's talking about, but in reality she is as clueless about the workings of the human body as the average Joe. Martina and Simon purport to be Korean culture experts, but without knowing Korean, they simply cannot be. |
Agreed! They should definitely learn Korean. Also, I wish they'd be just a little more honest about life here and not spend so many videos sugar coating things, but other than that more power too 'em. Go Simon and Martina! |

Nope, none at all. Just good old-fashioned callin' it the way it is.
Callin' a spade a spade. That's all, nothing more, nothing less.

In the mix of videos they have made are a number of videos about teaching in Korea and their GEPIK teaching time in Korea with only positives mentioned. Plus they have videos on behalf of certain recruiters. There's at least one podcast out there of them sounding more realistic about teaching in Korea, but that small nugget of "truth" somehow never made it into any of their videos. They knew better and could have easily made a "Here's the positives and negatives about teaching in Korea" but they chose to lie to their adoring fans. Does it matter? Well, some people are part of the problem and others are part of the solution. Bloggers who lie and say that bad restaurants are great will only cost you a bad meal but bloggers who lie about teaching in Korea could set you up for a year in hell. It's a much more dangerous lie for the viewers.
They're salespeople and only salespeople but not enough people realize that fact. |

I see. So I guess they got some cash from recruiters then?
I can only imagine who their adoring fans would be. I couldn't even get through 2 minutes of one of their videos.
Oh well, to each his own I suppose.
If people are dumb enough to watch that, then I suppose they get what
they deserve. |

I'm guessing it's mostly for people living outside of Korea so it'd would better for them to show the good side of things rather than bashing the place. Why don't a couple of you make a Bizarro World Simon and Martina? |
