On Spetember 3rd 2012, a few experienced teachers transferred from other teaching jobs in Korea to the SMOE program. Those teachers attended the EPIK orientation in Hyehwa, Seoul in late October 2012.
These teachers had slightly different contracts to the other SMOE folks, and attended a special meeting at the orientation.
They started 1 week later than usual, and thus signed a shorter contract (Sep 3rd 2012 - Aug 24th 2013). The reasoning for this short contract was that SMOE wanted to get teachers back in synch with the main program.
Those teachers accepted to not receive severance and certain other benefits, but with the proviso that they could apply to extend their contracts in August 2013 by a further 6 months....and then finally receive those benefits in March 2014.
This thread is for those teachers who may have questions when they decide to leave or extend by another 6 months...decision time being later this Summer 2013. |

No, it was all above board. They can receive their severance and other benefits if they extend the extra 6 months. |

What if the school doesn't extend the contract - ie, they score below X score in the evaluation, which in effect means that they are fired from the program..... |

Fair question. There will be no formal evaluation in August 2013, so the extra 6 months should just require approval by school management. Of course, the principal is the ultimate decision maker so it's possible a teacher could be refused the extra 6 months (thus losing their potential benefits) due to a personality clash or whatever. There's always a risk involved in something.
Most teachers were satisfied with the arrangement, given they had the opportunity to walk from their previous jobs straight into SMOE (outside of SMOEs normal schedule). Most teachers had jobs that finished on a Friday and they started SMOE the following Monday.
Korean co-teachers (due to lack of knowledge, language barrier etc) might not be a good source of information or clarification for those teachers in question. Hence this thread for questions that may arise. |

Hopefully the principal knows about this 6 month rule then
I bet money that at least 1 person will be on Dave's or the 'other site' moaning about how they got 'screwed over'
Heck, I might email them with the suggestion and ask for a 5% cut!
Only joking - it would have to be 10% |

Don't you mean "IF" they want you to extend? It might be above board but had they signed a full year contract and completed it there wouldn't be an "IF." |

Has anyone heard if their contracts will be extended till February. I asked my coteach about it today , and she said it will be after evaluation. She seemed surprised/confused when I told her about not being evaluated and the school should decide whether they want to keep me till Feb. |

Emails are being sent out this week to the teachers concerned (asking them if they want to extend the aforementioned 6 months or not). |

That's kind of interesting OP...did they explain why said teachers were selected for this 'opportunity'? Did you all have certain qualifications that made you stand out? I'm just curious, don't mean to divert discussion. |

No they didn't have extra qualifications. They just tended to have more teaching experience than those recruited from abroad. They were already living in Korea when they applied for the job (most were just finishing their contracts in other places, and were able to transfer to SMOE that weekend). |

Those sneaky and dubious contracts are illegal. Contact the labor board for an opinion. |

Nothing sneaky about it. Seriously doubt it's illegal. |

Does anyone know if we have to get a medical for the extension of our contract? I had asked my coteach but she doesn't know and SMOE hasn't replied to my email I sent 2 weeks ago.
I know you need a medical for RENEWAL, but what about extension?
Reason I'm asking is that I'm taking some workout supplements from iherb...and I'm worried about it affecting the results of the medical. |

2 weeks ago someone from admin left a letter on my desk. It was titled "2013 년도 건강검진 대상자 확인서 (직장 가입자)." As the only word i recognised was 건강검진 which means health check, i asked my coworker about it. He said i must take another health check before December. He recommended i get it done this summer before i extend my contract by the aforementioned 6 months.
To be honest i think he is unsure, and just wants me to get another health check just in case. I'd rather not waste my time or the hospitals time. I'd like an official response about this from SMOE. I don't know why they didnt answer your email. They probably don't know either. Email them again! They should have at least aknowledged your email, not very professional in my opinion. |
