Unposter is SO right! The hagwon experience teaches you a LOT!!! You learn to teach all different ages, different number and age of students and you learn to deal with the good and the bad of Korean life.
I worked in 3 different hagowns before landing a uni gig. One was terrible (late pay...had to turn in one board marker before being allowed to take another), one was ok (had to live with the director! ) and one was great! I learned so much about how to schedule my time in class, how to deal with difficult students in a small (as opposed to the larger public school) setting, and a much better understanding of Korean culture than I would have gotten elsewhere.
I would say (not having been in the hagwon world for a number of years) that 20% of hagwons are terrible, 20% are great and the other 60% are average. And, as in any other job in the world, you won't know if it's a good fit for you until you're here and doing it. |
