Can a person show up at any NHIC office to sign up for health insurance, or does it have to be the "local" one? |

I went to the office in the building outside of Gangnam station exit 1, despite being from Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do.
The guy there was polite, but his English was limited, so he connected me with the NHIC English service. It was hard to talk with her because of her accusatory tone and the way she would interrupt me in midsentence when I was replying to questions she was asking. She clearly believed I had been scamming the system and was only trying to get insurance now because of a hospital appointment this Saturday. I explained that I had been originally offered a 2.3 million salary, but asked for health insurance during the job interview, with my boss saying she could only provide health insurance and pension if I worked for a 2.2 million salary, which I accepted. I didn't know I didn't actually have insurance until the seventh month of my contract.
They called my boss. I think maybe I'll be getting insurance now, but I'm not certain. |
