I took the test in 2007 and I heard it's a lot easier. I remember the course test was relatively easy but you had to do exactly what the voice told you. A lot of people failed during the parallel parking part at the end which deducted a big chunk of points. I had to attend a hagwon for 3 or 4 hours to learn the course over and over again. However, this got easier?

For the road test, there were 2 'courses' that had to be memorized. There was the proctor and you and another test-taker. Unless you were unlucky, you could always watch someone do the test first before you give it a go. From what I remember, the proctor didn't say anything until the end of the test and you would have to go through the course via memory. However, now a navigation system just tells you what to do?

I'm asking for a friend who will need to take the driving test soon.

Thanks in advance.

-Technically you need some lessons before they let you do the functions / off road course test and you also need 10 hours driving lessons to do the final driving test BUT i dont think they reinforce that. I was able to do everything in 3 days without any lessons or class time ( this was last december 2012). Theres no parallel parking test during the functions/offroad course test anymore. Refer to my post on page 1 of this thread. You will have all the info there.... I would only recommend your friend to take lessons if he has no clue how to drive or very little driving experience... If he/she already knows how to drive well he can skip all the schooling/ lessons but only if the korean licensing center doesnt enforce this rule or ask for hagwon signature/ person who trained you license number...

- Theres no need to memorize any courses ( for the final road test). THey actually have about a dozen Different courses to pick from now so it would be impossible to memorize all of those. They now use a Galaxy Tab that Talks and gives out instructions in english. No need to know which course you will be driving ahead of time and no need to memorize. Just follow the english voice instructions. its 10000% clear. For example it tells you to start the car , to drive forward. Tells you to change lanes . Will tell you to turn left/right and will repeat 3 times . "turn left in 500 meters" " turn left in 250 meters" " left turn coming up" .. seriously nothing to worry about... THe Instructor Still Doesnt talk to you during the test. Just follow the Galaxy tab voice.... At the end of the road test the galaxy tab will tell you if you failed or passed... The parking test is done at the start of the final road test or at the end. It's all guided by the Galaxy tab...

something related ...

I did my driving test yesterday to upgrade licence "Type 2 Normal" to "Type 1 Normal". I narrowly passed. It was actually quite easy to pass provided you understood the Korean briefings (tips) prior to the test.

Why don't you ask someone to scan your licence back home like a friend of mine in Yongin. He got away with a copy of his licence laminated and drove around Korea for nearly 3 years. He went through police checks and played the foreigner card. You gotta love that foreigner card.
