Head to the nearest American air base... just in time for the NORKs to chem the air fields with their scuds.
Me, I'm just gonna grab an OB, sit in my apt and enjoy the fireworks. |
An OB? You deserve to get bombed. |

i don't see the point of registering with the embassy. are they gonna come pick you up? no. |
As someone who was registered with my country's embassy and in Japan when the big earthquake/tsunami/something-bad-has-happened-to-a-nuclear-power-plant-but-nobody-is-saying-for-sure-what situation occurred, I can say that the emails from my embassy that were sent at least once a day giving me the latest verified information (rather than the don't-panic!-All-is-OK-...maybe? version that the Japanese news sources were giving us) gave me great peace of mind. Also the clear advice that was given on what actions to take certainly made me glad to have been registered with them. It also helped ease the panic and unrest felt by my family & friends back home with them knowing that I had an official source of information & support that could keep them informed their end about what was going on.
It only takes a couple of minutes to register, so why not? Even if North Korea decides to bomb the South, I'm sure your family back home and even your family/friends here who may be cut off from you due to transportation & communication difficulties would appreciate your embassy being able to inform them ASAP that they're trying to help you, rather than hearing the officials initially saying "I don't know who you're talking about as they're not registered with us so we haven't even bothered to start checking if they're alive or not. Sleep well." |

I agree. Sheesh! Just where I want to be...a US military base...NOT!
Having been here since 1996, and having lived through lots of saber rattling, I've decided that it's best for me just to stay put. The country is going to be in turmoil and the US military will have a lot more on their minds than getting ex-pats out.
Having flashlights/candles, one of those camp-type stoves with plenty of gas, and a bunch of potable water on hand makes sense for any type of disaster including war, typhoons, power-outages and snow storms. And having all of your docs in one quickly accessible place is also a good idea.
And you MIGHT want to consider moving out in the countryside the next time your contract is up! Big targets will be Seoul/Incheon, Busan and Ulsan. If you're living in the middle of a rice paddy, it's more likely you'll survive an attack! |
