I was having a conversation with my new co-teacher the other day, and when he found out that I have a girlfriend, he was curious as to why I would have a white girlfriend in Korea. I mean, I had no idea there was a stipulation here that having a Korean girlfriend was essential to one's experience here.

Basically long story short, I told him that I am only attracted to white girls, and that while many Korean women are attractive, I have no interest in them at all due to the way they act, the boring convos etc - basically just said our cultures are too different and that I, as an ugly fellow, rely on my personality more than the color of my skin to 'get' girls.

End of story, I was told that I am racist. Fair enough. Everything is racist these days, I mean, I would not want to bring mixed-blood kids into this world, because it is unfair and in my opinion cruel to them. Talk about a loss of identity.

I know that I am dealing with the 'open-minded' PC crowd here, but good lord man, being attracted to one's own race makes one racist now? It's utterly ridiculous; saying that I don't like black American culture for instance does not mean that I am racist. I guess Korea is too influenced by America (hello rubbish cheese! Hello Taco Bell!) and is obsessed with race.

I never knew that as a white man, I would be in the wrong for dating a white girl. I must be an anachronism.

Of course if I said that my girlfriend was Korean, I'd just be the cracker that 'steals' 'their' women, because of course you know, Koreans own their women.

I don't think it's racist to have a preference.

It's a legitimate complaint though, the entire 'Koreans hate foreign men with Korean women' thing. But, as an anglophone from South Africa, same as the Americans, Australians, Brits etc we're used interracial relationships/multiculturalism. Try telling a Greek or Portuguese (for example) father that you, as a person not from their country/heritage are going to marry their daughter and see how far that gets you. Kapowskis right there.

I didn't see anything racist but I did think that the comments about mixed race children were something I would take issue with.

Yeah, because god forbid we burst the bubble and admit that mixed race kids have a hard time growing up/finding their identity. It's all toothpaste and bubble baths here, right.

Anyway, if you have mixed race kids, fair play to you - I just wouldn't want to deal with the impending identity crisis and other nonsense that will come from it. I'm just too weak of a man for that.

Really, this happened? Me, I am like the OP. Korean women are pretty, some even down right sexy. If I had to the choice to get down/jiggy/busy with one. I would willingly go along. Still, overall generally Korean women as I often say are not my cup of tea. I just prefer Caucasian. Yes things like culture, language and attitudes do help play in the choice. That does not say I might not end up with one.

Once again, I am surprised at this reaction. I thought it would be more of "Whew! Not another yellow fever woman stealing waygook. Yay more women for us guys!"

Maybe, he thought he just took what you said and translated through the aggrieved and what are we pissed about today Korean filter. He probably heard "Korean Women are ugly sows and not worth bedding." Plus the co-teacher must be stupid for wanting to sleep with such ugly women.....

Bang head against desk. By his logic it should be, when in Rome f**k the Romans. Of course that same logic will be the opposite if I a Korean feels otherwise.

See if you can twist his logic against him. If the co teacher had lived over seas did they have a foreign girl friend. So if the coteacher moved to Africa, he as the obligation to marry a African woman.

OP remember to not fall for this trap in the future. This one is a complicated version of the "Do you like Kimchi?" Just learn to say yes. "Yes, I like Kimchi a lot!. Look a bird over there. God forbid if you said you hated it".

I would say that over 90% of Korean guys in the US date pretty much exclusively Korean women (not referring to Korean-Americans, though there is a strong trend there too). Tell that to your co-worker and see his reaction.

Yeah, they've got it so tough. Jessica Alba and Keanu Reeves must be crying all the way to the bank.

OP- I think having a preference per say, to a certain type of women is not racial, some like them: tall, short, long hair, short hair, blue eyes, brown eyes, light skin, dark skin, fat, skinny, athletic, girly, conservative, liberal, etc.

But your views on mixed children are, I agree racist.
