I'm Asian-American and not Korean. I'm pale, so even with my last time, a handful of recruiters will ask me if I'm Korean. Then I tell them the disappointing "no" and never hear back from them again.

I understand and though it's a bummer, that's just how it can be. I know it's going to be a lot more difficult for me to get a job.

So my question is, does anyone know of recruiters who are willing to take on someone such as myself?

Only ASK Now has gotten back to me and have been open-minded.

I've responded to some job postings on here and they haven't responded or it has gone the same way as before.

Any help is much appreciated. Thank you. Smile

I'm sorry to hear that, but recruiters tend to have the ability to be very lazy these days, they can just decide whether or not they like the picture as to whether or not they read the resume. There are more applicants than jobs.

Your best chances are ignoring the recruiters and applying direct to a chain, YBM, CDI, or the others and be super flexible regarding your location.

Having said that, are you sure you want to come to Korea? The money is disappearing and the conditions are getting worse.

Good luck.

Is it really getting that bad?

Hopefully there are more options out there.. I'd really, really rather not do a big chain. 90% of all reviews from different chains I've read/heard about are negative.

Thanks for responding anyway.

Check out Star Teachers! They are wonderful, very professional, and work with an ethnicity. I hope this helps Smile

We've all got to start somewhere. If you plan on being in Korea for a couple of years, one year in a chain gets you here and gets you experienced while being paid in full and on-time.

The chains employ you to work, not to drink and party. But with the way the money's going, it's not like you can afford that anyway.

Are you kidding me? They were the most incompetent, rude, and unprofessional company I have ever worked with.

World Traveler: I am really sorry you had a bad experience with them. I've been working with Dexter and he's been very nice and very attentive. And to my knowledge, he hasn't sent me any unreputable hogwans (i.e not paying on time, stealing money, 11th month firings).

Like all recruiting companies, it is usually hit and miss, but Star Teachers was really wonderful to me and wonderful to my black friend who left for her job two weeks ago.

I haven't spoken to Dexter there. Maybe he is cool. (Then again, maybe it is just an act.)

You and your friend are female?

That means money for him (ka-ching), so of course he is nice to you.

In terms of desirability:

White females
Non-white females
White males
Non-white males

Yes, we both happen to be female, but I still believe Dexter would work with anyone. He is very kind and hard working. As long as you've got all your documents in order, I'm sure he could help you find something. But solid advice would be to put out as many applications as you can to different recruiters as you can. Something will be bound to hit.

Have you tried public school recruiters? Public schools are supposed to be non-discriminatory (at least there's a better chance compared to hagwons). I've heard good things about Canadian Connection and Korean Horizons. Or check out EPIK. The application process is lengthy and involves some hard work (essay, lesson plan, TESOL cert. if your degree isn't in English, Education or Linguistics), but it might be worth it in the end.

Public school through Korvia or Korean Horizons

Plenty of Asian Americans (non Korean) that I have met through orientation.

I've known a number of people who had good experiences with them as well, of varying ethnicities and genders, no less.

I personally wouldn't trust any recruiter. They are making commission off of you. Would you trust any car salesman? There are tons of slimey people in the recruiting business. Assume anything they tell you could be a lie. I guess I should clarify that my experience with that company was with just a single recruiter working there. Maybe the other ones are better, who knows. (But for all, their main goal is to get money. You guys know that, right?)

Yeah EPIK should be pretty good in terms of hiring people who aren't young blonde females, which is the stereotype for a lot of Korean ESL employers. At my EPIK orientation there were many Asian teachers, and many who were black or Indian or Hispanic or whatever, and plenty of older folks.
