|
|
Has anyone heard of/taken/taught the Test of English Writing for Global Communication? I had a former student (now first year high school) email me yesterday to ask if this is something she should prepare for/take, as she wants to study global marketing at university. I googled it, and all I got was a Korean website that, as far as I could tell with my limited Korean, looks like a private course of some sort. It may be something that a company cooked up for business, but I'm not sure.
Anyone heard of this? I'd like to give her advice, since she was a good student.

Internationally there are the big 3:
TOEIC
TOEFL
IELTS.
If she wants to study abroad then check with the uni in question. They will tell you (or indicate) on their website which test(s) they will accept and what level is required. (typically an IELTS 7.0-7.5 (over the 4 skills) or equivalent for academic work).

Right, I hear that. If you check the link it will give you this TOEWC page, which is new to me. Since I don't know enough Korean to read it, I'm not sure what this thing is. Google has turned up bupkis also, other than that page and associated links. I think it may be a for-profit writing course with its own test, but I'd like to make sure. Thanks! |

Ive never heard of that test.
For university, she will just need some combination of the following tests:
Overseas
TOEFL
SAT
IELTS
Korea (Global Leader, International College, etc..)
TOEFL
TOEIC
TEPS
FLEX
KSAT |

SATs are NOT a test of English competency and they are only valid for the US.
All the rest are valid, international tests of English competency and the TOEIC is also in the list (and recognized) for international use.
TEPS FLEX and KSAT are NOT recognized outside of Korea for anything and least of all not as a determination of English competency.

What the heck is this thing? I may have to ask a Korean for some translation of that site. I already told my student she should look there and contact them about questions, since it's a mystery to us. Thanks, Ttompatz! |

SAT's are valid in other countries (U.K as an example), and can be used in place of TOEFL to meet the language requirements at most American universities. |

SATs can also be used for entrance to Korean universities. |

I'm with you GlobusMonkey. It is owned and run by an Economic Daily newspaper here that is into education and hagwons. The 'experts' listed as developers are a list of about 15 English speakers of whom I think 3 had formal qualifications in linguisitics or language teaching. That should give you some idea of it's credentials.
The web address was .or.kr which is govt which made me wonder but I am not sure how they got that as there is no official nature it at all.
I would steer your student to a major accredited test. |

.or.kr is an "organization" (.org) and NOT a government .go.kr website.
They have no "official" status and are NOT internationally recognized.
