I've been here a few years & can tell you it is brutal in July and August.
I bought a "Carrier" system (mounted on the wall w/ fans and accessories outside plus a hose to drain away humidity condensation) a few years ago at the electronics mart for about $400 USD- it wasn't "junk" but only cooled a small part of my apartment.
Just buy one of the newer LG or Samsung portables (at least 12,000 BTU)
They come on casters, weigh about 70-80 pounds are easily sold when you leave and are arctic blowtorches. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the condensed air (water humidity) is blown out the exhaust.
The reason I made this post was because Korea in July can be miserable. Fans don't do it what with the mosquitos & that crap in Samgakji "Ice cubes + integrated fan" is laughable.
Get your AC unit now because they'll be pricey in the summer.

I got no idea what's up, but my heating went on twice only since Feb 1st. And it's >24*C all the time inside. Quite unbearable for sleeping Sad That said, the gas bill does seem high (90.000KRW).

I am not sure I'll be staying beyond April this time, but if I am, I'll need something better than this little Whisen. Any suggestions for a portable in the ranks of LG CC18AWR, at least in functionality? (that's what I use in my 45m2 flat back home)

How about opening the window? Wink

Im not sure if the units will be pricier during summer but they might not be available after a sudden rise in demand. During last summers heat wave a friend of mine contacted online sellers and they said he should wait 7-10 days because they all ran out of stock. Hi-mart even went further and suggested 1 month waiting time.

Someone had a used Samsung 4 pyung (or 6?) room unit for 50,000 on CL today... I almost jumped at that, and don't even need one. They even offered to ship it personally for another 10,000.

All 3 "windows" are about 2m x 15cm or less and open at 45* degree only. I kept em open during -10*C days and I was still walking in slippers. No real cool breeze can get in.
I generally need/want cooler space than most folks, but even short-stay Koreans didn't keep their jackets on in my flat Smile

I bought a 6 pyeong Whisen which was barely over 1 year old for 40,000 off of CL. There are some crazy good deals every now and then.

Related topic, my AC started making kind of a gasping sound towards the end of last summer. Seemed to be putting out less cold air too. I think I might need to get the stuff it uses topped up. (Is it a gas or liquid?)

Anyone know how to say what I'm looking for in Korean? And how much can I expect to pay for something like that? (If it matters, I've just got one of those wall mounted ones with a drainage tube going outside)

Are you supposed to top off the AC unit with something? It sounds like your filter needs to be changed.

Oh, maybe that's it. To be honest I'm not really sure, but I could swear I've heard somewhere that AC's have to be refilled occasionally, just not sure with what.

A quick google search says yes, they sometimes need to have the coolant replaced.

40000 off the full retail price on a second-hand unit is not a good deal considering the seller wouldn't have gotten more than 70-80000 won if he'd sold it to a pawnshop.
