I don't think I ever read enough of him to get a firm handle on what he was all about, beyond that he was generally liberal. I don't know that I was aware, for example, that he was so closely associated with legal writing. And I'd probably forgotten that he wrote Gideon's Trumpet.

Remember him on Firing Line with William F. Buckley a few times.

I enjoyed his articles in the New York Times. He was a good writer with a good perspective on things. He lived through the Great Depression and WWII and as people of that generation die out, we really lose a lot.

Young people today who grew up under Reagan just see the world extremely differently.
