Is working 1-9 a lot better than 2-10? I'm hearing from some people that it may be the case - that getting out at 9 lets you have fun in the evening, but getting out at 10, despite being only one hour later, just makes the evening too short and too late.

Anybody have any history with this?

I work 130 to 9 and 2-9 on Tuesday and Thursday, but when we have the winter and summer intensives I have to work until 10 and there is a noticeable differences for some reason. I felt more tired getting off at 10 as opposed to 9, but that just may be because of the intensive courses. During the week, getting off at 10 feels so late at least in a smaller city like Gwangju. Anyways, getting off at 10 on Fridays isn't too bad as people are still raging since its 불금

Maybe it might matter depending on what time you get to bed. It would not matter to me much. As long as I got my eight. Maybe the later 10 oclock end might muck up the cheapos. Not wanting to spend money to take a taxi might keep some people home.

Many supermarkets and some of the better restaurants close up between 9.30 and 10.30 meaning if you don't finish until 10 the number of places available to eat, and shopping you can do after work diminishes a lot.
Have the working hours in Korea really deteriorated to the point that 8 hours a day these days is more or less the default? When I was last there it was none of this 1-9 or 2-10 business. Seemed like 2-8 or 3-9 was the standard. Really is an employers market there these days.

I try to find a mixed schedule. First, I try to start late on Monday and finish early on Friday. In this narrow example, you would work 2-10 on Monday and 1-9 on Friday.

Realistically, you could work 2-10 on Monday, maybe take a morning adult class in the morning on Tuesday and finish up that day by 6pm. Going out and enjoying restaurants is not a 10 or 9 proposition in my scope of things. Dinner time is 6pm. So, there needs to be 3 or so days where I finish before 6pm. One formula would be to set 1 day where you work many hours. I had one where I didn't work Monday at all, but on Wednesday and Thursday I worked from 8am until 5pm. I had 8 classes a day in those cases. Split the other 14 classes among the remaining 3 days.

You can easily do shopping in between your teaching hours if you have a split shift.

Don't get suckered into those long jobs where you have to stay in the building like a prisoner and commute an hour to the school. Make sure you are within walking distance.

Split shifts? 8 hour teaching days? Ugh Mad . No thanks, but whatever floats YOUR boat, mate!

Personally I'd rather stick my finger in a cheese grater.

I had a split shift schedule where I taught 1 or 2 morning adult classes. Went back home, did some shopping, went to the bank, met a friend at a cafe, had a lunch date, took a Korean class, fixed my computer, etc...

Then, around 2:30, I would stroll back into the school, pick up my schedule and teach young ones until 4pm, middle and high schoolers until 6 or 7 pm. Go home, do some shopping, meet a friend at a cafe, have an evening date, take a Korean class, hang out with other teachers, etc...

I don't know where you get 8 hours. My contract was 28 classes, not 40 (no office hours, yo wee yo!!!). They scheduled more on Monday-Thursday, so I got my Fridays off. 3 day weekend.

If it saves your fingers and keeps the graters clean, I'd be happy to take a split shift schedule as the one I described Razz
