I just spent the last hour and a half at woori sending money home and trying to sign up for internet banking.

I didn't manage to finish the process, and between mandatory IE use and all the ActiveX controls I think I'm in over my head just trying to check my balance.

How is anyone supposed to set this stuff up for convenient everyday use?

What do you use internet banking for and how easy is it to set up?

Korean internet banking is a nightmare. So many stupid securities things to download and install. I got to sit down with the CEO of consumer banking for an hour (at one of the large banks in Korea) and I told him their internet banking wasn't compatible with Macs (ActiveX problem or something) and that it would automatically send me to the mobile banking page (apparently mistaking my Macbook for an iPhone). He said his wife had a Mac and had mentioned the same thing to him, but that the portal was actually set up and maintained by a third party vendor. Go figure Rolling Eyes

Yeah, it's a nightmare for sure.

Just one thing, did you get a kind of key code and/or a digital certificate issued?

I find the smartphone apps to be way less of a headache than the websites. I only use it for checking my balance and tracking money flow. I still like to use ATMs for transfers.

You make your way up to Sinhan Bank in gwanghamun. There, they have a location dedicated to foreign people in Korea.
They give a big run down with clear explanations in English about setting up Internet banking..

Do a google search for the shinhan bank global center Seoul and you ll be alright! They do their business 100% in English..
It ll still be a little tricky but the little bit of willpower goes far..

They also have a FaceBook site where you can ask questions and actually get answers! http://www.facebook.com/ShinhanBank?ref=ts&fref=ts

Just don't know that I feel "safe" with Shinhan, knowing they are so easily hacked.

KEB has decent Internet Banking. Still requires IE on Windows and you have to install a load of stuff but once that's done it works ok. There is a dedicated app for Mac which works even better, and the iPhone app is pretty good, too.

want a simple work-around to avoid wire transfer fees and internet banking while raising your korean credit rate and getting cc mileage?

get a square reader for free (https://squareup.com/reader), tie it to your canadian/american bank account and get it mailed to you here in korea. swipe your korean cc/debit card whenever you need to send money back.

bam, quicker than wire transfer, cheaper, you get the benefits of using your cc/debit card, and its hassle-free.

Don't use Woori Bank to transfer money, use KEB's 'Easy One' service. After you send money through this one time and it works, they'll give you a card which lets you transfer money without even going to a teller.

I am with Woori too. They're ok but I can't use my account card online. Does anyone know of a bank in Korea that lets me use my debit card online?

I'm using Woori's Visa "check" card online without issues. I did specifically ask for it to be usable online and abroad.

Is that a proper Credit Card though or a debit card? I'd rather get a debit card, I hear getting a CC here is pretty difficult.

it's a debit card.

if you work for a large chain they can help you get a cc because banks here like to see how big and profitable your company is before issuing a cc.

as well, i've heard about many people successfully getting a samsung or lotte credit card through the adjummas that sign you up for them in department stores without any help.

i'm surprised no one has commented on my idea however. why would anyone transfer money any other way?

Mostly because it confused me. I'm sooooo not an early adopter, or even late adopter. My phone, despite being all flashy to me, is not on the compatible devices list.

Anyway how do you transfer a large sum of money (say, more than $1,000 US) that way? Is there some option in the UI on the phone or something?

Cool thanks. Did they issue it to you straight away or was it posted out to you?
